2007 Foillard 3.14

Got sucked into the hype early on. I have had mixed experiences with these wines, mostly in Paris. I usually feel they are too ripe and not what I seek from Gamay. Decided to pop an 07 to go with Hainanese chicken to see if age has helped. And yep still too ripe and roasted for my tastes. The Cuvee de Capo of Beaujolais. Or said another way how to waste great terrior.

Do others feel differently? Admittedly I have not had a recent vintage.

I have had the '07 and '13 most often. Like them both, the '07 more, and it may be better younger (something I say only occasionally).

The wine was definitely better with some air but I still don't love it. I guess it is just not what I want from Gamay. I have a few more bottles.

Hainanese chicken is an interesting choice for this wine, too. I do often like Gamay with Chinese, but Hainanese chicken rice doesn't put me in this frame of mind. Some years back Yixin was pouring Vincent Gaudry with chicken rice...

I thought the 07 from magnum was pretty magnificent about 3 years back.

Wow...I bet that was good. The 3.14 or the normale?
3.14
I’m generally not a fan of the various “special” cuvées but this one was pretty memorable.

Yeah, I bet it was combo of 07 and magnum...

I am the same, I actually haven't had a special that I've liked - but I haven't had them aged - perhaps that is a different deal.

Hope you are well!

I still have two magnums I'd almost forgotten about. Guess this means I should open one soon and raise a glass to Joe Dougherty, in memoriam.

Opening magnums alone is a little problematic, though.

This reminds me of a funny rejoinder not too long ago when having dinner with Marc Perrin (Beaucastel). We were enjoying different formats during the dinner and during a discussion about different formats in general, someone asked Marc which format he typically prefers. He promptly said, "I prefer magnums when drinking alone".

It cracked everyone up. Amidst the chuckles, I told him he surely must have used that statement before...he just grinned.

. . . . Pete

Indeed. The last time I had the '07 3.14 from magnum was at one of Dougherty's Dressner vigneron fetes. Coming up on six years since his passing. So not the same in the NY scene without him.

In a prodigal display of self-serving customer serving I opened a bottle of 2013 3.14 last night and it was as delish as all previous. Aromatically super elegant and expressive. I paid particular attention to whether the mouthfeel could be called overripe and inner congresspeople from across the political spectrum all voted no.

Well I am clearly in the minority on this. I did get an email from a lurker who said he served this wine blind and a group of experienced tasters guessed Syrah. I have not had the 13 as most of my experiences with the π were vintages around the 07. Next time I see a 13 or later vintage I will give it a try.

I should have chimed in earlier. I’ve had a number of vintages of 3.14 including the ‘07 and have never really understood the fuss. So you are not alone.
