Impressions July 2020

A strange dream last night involving me shouting “but don’t you understand how filigreed it is” at an Alexandre Filaine skeptic reminded me that it has been a while since I checked out Wine Disorder, where I ran across your note. I’ve had bottles of the Cuvée Spéciale and DMY (both marked L16) at home since this spring that I was looking forward to opening with friends only to be thwarted by SARS-CoV-2 and that fell off my radar. In another example of synchronicity, yesterday afternoon a good friend and I finally set a date for a CRB dinner we’ve been discussing for months and as he is also a friend of Sophie’s, I now know what to open to kick things off. It is hard to believe that it has almost a year since the Southern Jeebus where Sophie introduced us to Filaine.

I’m cursing you for your notes on the 2008 Larmandier, which I hope I like as much as you do considering that I have a case coming when weather permits. I seem to have inadvertently ordered six in June after forgetting that I’d already ordered six in April.

I also miss Patrick Campbell’s wines, though I have a small stash left of the 1991 through 1997, at least one of which could be fun to try if we can ever keen again. A magnum of the 1985 a couple of years ago was sensational.

I’m sure Jeff will report out in more detail in the near future, but a warning on another mousy J-L Dutraive: 2019 Fleurie Domaine de la Grand'Cour. Plus plenty of VA. Too much for me and I’m pretty tolerant compared to some. Seems like this is becoming a pattern of fatal flaws. The mousiness as a second finish here was really nauseating.

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm out of Dutraive. I'm finding I drink a lot less Gamay these days and I'm not exactly sure why. Part of it is the increase in mousiness/VA of some of my favorite producers (e.g. Dutraive) and some of it is how hard it is to catch them in a drinking window that is my sweet spot which is structurally coming together but not tertiary or pinote (e.g. Coudert and to some extent Desvignes). I think it is some combination of me changing and the wines changing but I'm struggling to figure it out. There are few joys as pure as Gamay on point.

This.
In fact, I don’t think I’ve got a bottle in my cellar right now.
And I do miss those truly joyous moments.
Best, jim

My comment was "there's definitely something organic in there".
