Retailer: Leon & Son

Anyone have any experience?

They have some naturalish and other stuff that's in the hard-to-find for me category.

I'll be having the wine shipped, so any specific experience with that would be great.

I continue to be amazed at your purchases during the summer! I guess plenty of people order and then have the stores hold until shipping season. But for whatever reason that seems disjointed to me. I'm still looking at 4+ weeks until pulling the trigger, although have plenty of plans percolating.

Funny that you found this shop. It's quite good and as you note, has some overlap with the much maligned Disorderly palate. One of my Nyc accommodations is a few blocks away from the shop, so I've been there many times over the years and have always been satisfied, including purchases of older wine. Plus the owner appears serious, for whatever that's worth.

That said, I have no in-depth knowledge of their various supply chains. Presumably shipping would be straight forward and not dependent on shop specifics?

I haven't *really* pulled the trigger on too much. I had my eye on some wine at Gordon's in MA, but was too spooked. I did buy some back vintage Roddolo Barolo (rare as hen's teeth) from R Squared, along with some Peyre Rose.

Honestly, I don't really like to buy outside of my home market but certain things that I really want aren't available here and I think they are long term super-allocated/out of my comfort zone sorts of wines. I like to keep my spending as local as possible and I'm also super worried about provenance. I'll pay more if I can trust the provenance.

There is something particular at Leon that is hard to come by (though not impossible) and doesn't come into the market.

Where I reside, I rarely if ever order wine to be shipped during warm/hot months. However, I made an exception with a shipment from Antica Terra a few weeks ago as they said they would ship overnight with a freezer pack in the container. And, sure enough, it arrived the next day and the freezer pack was still doing its thing and the wine status/temperature was totally satisfactory.

A pleasant outcome.

We could have a new Bored game: What wine is Nathan eying at the retailer?

Looking at this one, perhaps Simonne Rouge with some age? Don't see you doing Ooka. Aged Chamonard? The Preadeaux X? That's three guesses, so I should stop.

Ha! In today's market I'm too nervous to tell.

I can access Simone and have some Pradeaux X (which is awesome). I rely on Eric for drinking aged Chamonard...

That was my question regarding Gordon's since I stop by there occasionally.

Along those lines: One of the stores I buy from in Germany happens to be the sole importer of Clos Rougeard, but the last vintage available to regular buyers was 2010. After that they only sold to restaurants.
Today they offered 6 wooden cases of 2014s to their newsletter customers with 3 S-C and one each of Brézé, Les Poyeux, and Le Bourg. 1200 Euros per case. The price for such a 6-pack for the 2010s (without the wooden box) was under 400 Euros.

Well, if it isn't Deperu Holler -- I think that's where Nathan's shack is -- then it's probably the Alta Piemonte stuff.

Nice shop, indeed. Outside my usual peregrinations.

I looked earlier and was too lazy, so just guessed La Charpenterie.

What an interesting selection, and only a 15 minute walk from David's Brisket.

I have my own guess as to what nathan is interested in but out of respect for his wishes will message it to him in case I'm right.

Great store, now the best in my neighborhood.

Also, thanks for the David's Brisket suggestion, Jay. We went there for the first time earlier this summer after you mentioned it, I think on the Berserker board - flippin' fantastic!

Oh good. I've been recommending it to loads of people ever since it was recommended to me and I tried them out. I think you're the first person who listened to me.

Now I feel like making a trip into Brooklyn.

I'm not all that happy with this note on their website:

COVID-19 UPDATE:

If a wine you selected is out of stock, we will replace with another we love of equal value and in the same style.

Anyone know if their store is open or are they pickup only?

They are open but at the moment they are not allowing patrons to browse. Part of the reason for that is they are undergoing a bit of construction work and they want to minimize bodies in the store. You may come to the store and ask for what you want at the counter and they will fetch it for you. Or you can pre-order online and pick up.

Yeah, my concern about pre-ordering online was their annoying disclaimer
