Lafarge and Billiards

Earlier this week my son had his 15th birthday. Since it was a weekday and we couldn't celebrate all that much, my wife and I had a 2017 Domaine Drouhin's Petite Secondes, which was quite nice, especially at the ~$20 we paid for the bottle.

Tonight we had the actual celebration, including a 2005 Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru. A lovely bottle of wine. Leather and dried flowers on the nose, tasting a bit of earth and tart cherries. Quite a bit of sediment. I loved it and this is definitely in my "drink now" category. My son was "meh" in response to his taste. My wife greatly preferred the previous night's Drouhin.

After dinner we played a bit of pool. In the very first game, my wife ran the table, from the break through the 8-ball. "You know" she said, "that Burgundy was pretty good!"

Context is everything.

Awesome, thanks for sharing.

My youngest tonight told me that her sip of Croix Boissée tasted like skin.

Coincidentally, tonight I opened a bottle of the 2010 Lafarge Passetoutgrains L’Exception with smoked quail. Very tart red berry fruit came into its own with the food. A nice mineral veneer gave it a lovely overall impression.

It probably wasn't the intention, but that description would make me inclined to another taste to try and see what your youngest was picking up in the wine.

That sounds like a great combination (smoked quail and Passetoutgrains) to me.

It was indeed. The wine managed to stand up to the assertive flavors of the bird.
