    Wine in Cinema

I totally agree. Though I don't remember the scenes with wines -- just the egg.

    Red wine with Asian food?

    Yes, absolutely. Or Les Granges.

    Red wine with Asian food?

Loire Cab Franc. From my experience, it goes remarkably well -- for a red wine -- with Chinese food that's not over the top spicy. And I recently had a bottle of Chinon with phenomenally good Indian food. It didn't match every dish, but it was great with some of them.

Where do y'all like to eat in new orleans?

+1. Was there just this past Friday evening for the first time and it was amazing. Pepiere La Pepie Cot among other great wines. Baudry Les Grezeaux for $37.

Where do y'all like to eat in new orleans?

Commanders for lunch has 25 cent martinis (maximum of three!) and good, reasonably priced two and three course meals. But I haven't had grilled oysters there.

    Asimov today

I think he's right about Buty and Kerloo (haven't tried the others mentioned). I also think Gramercy, Waters, Fjellene and Rotie are all making really good wines with miminal or no new oak and a bit less extraction than the norm.

    Ship wine to Maryland?

Maryland now allows direct sales by out-of-state wineries to residents (it used to be a felony). It took years upon years of repeated efforts (led by my very own state senator) to overcome NRA-style opposition from the distributors' lobby. The law is far from perfect -- it requires more...

    NWR - Corn Smut

The one time I tried it was at Oyamel. Earthy, funky, yummy. Just how I like my smut.

    NWR: Searching for a College

I'm not an academic, but I have one daughter in college and another who starts next fall, so we've done a lot of looking over the past few years. One school your daughter might want to check out is Macalester College in St. Paul. It has a very heavy international orientation with lots of foreign...

    Less Dumb & More Dumber

What, no Schmidt's? (25 cents a glass at my local bar with a pool table.)

NWR PSA: Authentic Sichuan Food in DC

I'm not sure. I think of it as the former because most of the dishes seem to be Sichuan and the heat levels are not compromised to western tastes, but I'm not sure I'd recognize the clues if it is really Taiwanese. It has nothing going in the ambiance department -- you order from the counter --...

NWR PSA: Authentic Sichuan Food in DC

Thanks for the heads-up. I agree that with a few exceptions, DC is sorely lacking in quality Chinese food. I'm fortunate to live close to Oriental East, though getting dim sum on the weekend requires waiting in line forever. In my experience, the best authentic Chinese food in the area requires...

    Rest well, Joe Dressner

Condolences to his family and friends. I never knew him, but he and his colleagues did more to improve the quality of my wine-drinking life than anyone else out there.
