    TN: '90 Ridge Lytton Springs

Ok, I was racking the memory banks and we did make a Lytton Springs Zin, but it wasn't from the Lytton Springs property (which was owned by Dick Sherwin), but was made from grapes on Lytton Springs Road (the old Norton Ranch). My bad. Should have thought a bit more before shooting off my mouth...

    TN: '90 Ridge Lytton Springs

Hi all, I haven't been on this site for quite a while, but happened to take a look and thought I'd make a comment on this one, since I joined Ridge at the end of '89 (and stayed until '98). If that magnum was truly 1990 (and had the black label) then it wasn't a Ridge wine at all--at that...

    California uber alles

Sorry, it's been awhile since I checked the boards..... The 30th works out just fine with me--we can meet at Dashe Cellars at 11:00 or so and taste some wines, then just stroll over to Nido for lunch. Let me know who's in, so I can talk to Sylvia at Nido and get a table reserved for us...

    California uber alles

I haven't checked into Disorder in quite a while, and was shocked to find my name mentioned. I really have got to get out more often.... By all means, come on out to Oakland--we're just off Jack London Square at 55 4th st. Our recent Les Enfants Terribles bottlings are really quite...

    Chicago Remembers SFJoe (9/20)

Actually, Joe tasted the Grenache Blanc in barrel earlier this year. He said "Hmmmm. I might actually like Grenache Blanc after all....it normally turns my stomach." I took that as high praise. Or he was being nice....I'll never know now.

He was the best of the best

Words can't express my sorrow and grief. To think I won't spend another evening laughing and enjoying his essential Joe-ness is unthinkable. I can't believe that we won't see another pithy 5-word Joe comment on this board. He was simply the best friend a person could have, and I will miss him...

    Are the times a-changin'?

Just ran across this thread and thought I'd chime in. I attended Davis in the mid-80's, and at that time, anyway, the emphasis was indeed on producing "sound wines." I certainly don't remember them pushing any particular agenda of wine style, beyond trying to make non-defective wines, and...

    TLDR: Postmodern Winemaking

My personal experience from working the cellar at Lafite-Rothschild in 1989 is that they did indeed chaptalize at that time (I dumped many 50-kg bags of sugar and burned the paper sugar bags to make sure the evidence was destroyed). And that was a warm year, of course, so I would imagine that it...

Anyone up for dinner in Vegas on May 15?

I was in Vegas on business last week, and on my one non-booked evening I sat at the bar at Strip Steak (in the Mandalay) and had a truly transcendent skirt steak as an entree. One of the cheapest steaks on the menu, and it was something to write home about. Not bad list, also (full disclosure...

They're Gonna Put Me In The Movies...

...but I'm going to be in it too. For those of you who wish to attend the showing, you can type DASHE (all in caps)in the Discount Code box and you'll get $5 off the normal $15 price. Ten bucks to see two wine stars such as Steve Edmunds and Mike Dashe. Such a deal!

    Cider

I know a great producer of cider in my wife's town in Brittany, and am flying off to the town next week. I'm thinking of bringing some samples back and letting the folks at Terroir try them, so if you happen to visit Terroir on Aug 10th or 11th, they may have some samples to taste. (This of...

Climate change is not responsible for rising alcohol levels

Personally, I think it's a little funny that all these people who don't actually pick grapes are making these blanket statements about alc levels and climate. Without question, winemakers have been rewarded by publications for producing riper, extracted, high alcohol wines. It's a stylistic...

Make a Dashe for the Avant-Garde Wine Club

Thanks for the recommendations. I was just poking y'all about 10 bells. I was going to take her to the Peking Duck House, just because it's close to where I'm staying. With Joe out of town, my main restaurant critic is unavailable.
