Southern Jeebus Durham, NC

Nathan can verify but my understanding was that Jamie would be sending (in advance) a bunch of the old nebbiolo wines and therefore there would be a participation fee to cover those costs.

Yes, this exactly. Jamie will furnish the wine for the dinner. Is there a cost threshold we shouldn't exceed?

And FWIW, downtown Durham is booming with hotels. Down the block from the The Durham Hotel is 21C, yet another newish boutique hotel. Plus the old-fashioned Durham Marriott City Center.

We just recently stayed in a 21C in Nashville on our way back on our Florida road trip. Interesting concept: art gallery in the hotel with plenty of artwork scattered throughout. We quite enjoyed the Nashville outlet, but each will be distinct, I'm sure.

There is also the Unscripted hotel if the others aren't cool enough.

Again, LMK if there is a cost threshold for old nebbiolo so I can let Jamie know. Otherwise, I'll just tell him to do what interests him most.

I'm letting him know tomorrow Wednesday January 17, 2018.

How high are you thinking of going? I'd prefer to keep the cost of the dinner under $250, but could be persuaded to stretch that under the right conditions.

I was just going to say something similar. Hard to name a specific price without seeing the specific bottles, number of people, etc. But I think it's safe to say that we trust the prices will be fair and are prepared to spend for tasty wine, without necessarily seeking a Baller Saudi Prince Rudy Label Meal.

OK, thanks. I will relay to Jamie. The wines depend on what people were comfortable with. No one's really making money on any of this, just so everyone is aware.

Since we are now just a month out, should we start refining the plans for Saturday? As I said upthread, I like the idea of BBQ for Saturday lunch with CRB, Loire Cabernet Franc, and/or Beaujolais, and going without a set theme for Saturday night, but I have a lot of variety in the cellar so I’m open to a theme from pretty much any country and region as well.

As a spur to discussion, here are some of the more traditionally Disorderly wines I’m thinking about bringing:

1997 Domaine de la Bongran M“con Clessé Cuvée Tradition Sélection E.J. Thévenet (which I promised Nathan I’d bring)
1998 Domaine des Petits Quarts (Godineau) Anjou Sec
1995 Denis Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau Sec
1998 Weingut Josef Jamek Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Achleiten
1998 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein
1999 Franck Peillot Roussette du Bugey Altesse de Montagnieu

1996 or 1998 CRB Côt (which vintage depends in part on which one I can actually access in my cellar)
1995 L. Farou Chinon Clos du parc de St.-Louans (Really old school Chinon)
1996 Pierre-Jacques Druet Bourgueil Vaumoreau
1996 Joël Taluau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes

1999, 2000, or 2002 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette Cuvée Tardive

1999 Eric Texier Côtes du Rhône-Brézème and/or Côte Rotie

Should we get BBQ take out and eat at my place?

Most of the good BBQ places are dry. Alternately, we could load up the mini-van (I have a fucking mini-van now!!!!) and make a road trip to Skylight, maybe the most famous NC BBQ joint, but that would also be dry.

I'll make a reservation at Rue Cler for Saturday night for a late dinner 8:30 or so, that work for folks?

Friday night will also be at Rue Cler, but we will have a set menu to accompany the G. Rinaldi vertical that Jamie will lead. I still don't have a final price yet, but I expect it to be under $200 without tax or tip. I'd like to get it as close to $150 as I can without losing money.

Mike, from your list, I'd love Bongran, Denis and CRB.

I am leaning towards a free-for-all, but could be persuaded otherwise. What do other participants think?

Nice that this is getting closer.

I'm almost certainly out for Saturday lunch (family obligations and all) but am set for both dinners. I'm guessing you want a late start to Saturday dinner because of the extended lunch. If I had to choose I would start earlier, but it does make sense.

I probably have fewer wine options than the rest of you, and wouldn't have anything too special/aged for Loire/Beaujolais themes. So Saturday night free-for-all certainly works for me. I had been thinking of dry German riesling, Rebholz GGs from 2009 and 2012, Koehler Ruprecht Saumagen Rs from 2009.

Glad you can make it to both! Those wines all sound great and I'm not sure I've ever had the Rebholz wines.

I like the idea of picking up BBQ so we can drink with it. I may be adding one to the list, as my friend Eric Brown (proprietor of the now-defunct Le Caveau) has expressed an interest in coming and is trying to confirm if he is free that weekend.

The G. Rinaldi vertical on Friday is exciting - count me in!

The idea of picking up BBQ and heading to Nathan's for Saturday lunch sounds great if it would not be too much of an imposition. Nathan - it is up to you since you would have to host, but that would be my vote.

In no particular order, here are some potential options I was considering for Saturday night:

1999 Clos Rougeard l'Orphelin Rose
2006 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeux (or another vintage if preferred)
2012 Jerome Prevost Fac-Simile
2011 Overnoy/Houillon Chardonnay
2011 Thierry Allemand Sans Soufre Cornas
2000 Baudry La Croix Boissee
2007 Edmond Vatan Clos la Neore (or another vintage if preferred)
1959 Huet Le Haut Lieu Moelleux
1989 Pinon Reserve Passerillee (or Goutte d'Or or Cuvee Botrytis)

Any requests?

For lunch Saturday, perhaps 2005 CRB Cot. I also need to bring my last bottle of 2002 Huet Petillant Reserve to drink with some comrades so that you can vouch for my statements about it in the 2002 Huet Premox thread. That could also be a lunch wine or a dinner wine.

That's great. Please confirm ASAP because we only have a limited number of seats available for Friday night (we only have 1 bottle of each wine).

All of those sound cool. No one has mentioned Burgundy at all. What say folks? I've got lots of Rougeard and Baudry (although no 2000 CB) if we want to build something around that.

With your CRB 2005, my 2009 and Mike's we have a real interesting comparison.

And it sounds like there is consensus on take out BBQ for lunch. That's easy, but I had better double check with my wife first.

Unfortunately Eric has a conflict and can’t make it.

Burgundy is always a good idea, but it sounds like you folks have some mini-themes on other regions. And FWIW I don't have much in the way of special high-ticket Burgundy. I have some 05 Boillot Champonnet and Cherbaudes, but maybe we do a Boillot dinner another time.

I don't things need to be high ticket, just of interest to you and stuff you want to open with other folks who will also find them interesting. Sometimes these are high ticket, sometimes not.

After how well the Brouillards showed the other night, I'm quite interested in both of those Gevrey.
