NYC... again. Jan 15 JEEBUS?

A request was made for 5:30 so we have a 5:30 reservation for a party of 6 at Salt & Ginger in Jersey City. It is about a 1-2 minute walk from the Grove St. PATH station depending on which exit you use. I recommend the stairs opposite the escalator.

313 Grove St, about 1/4 block south of Christopher Columbus across from the (Coming Soon) Shake Shack.

I'll be making a reservation for 6 people. is 5pm okay for everyone since people have to work on Monday?
I’m getting into LGA at 5:15 so the earliest I could make it would be about 6, I’m afraid.

Jay, perhaps 6p is a better choice?

The better choice would have been flying into Newark :)

I'll change the reservation to 6pm.

Mark - if it helps don't worry about bringing wine. I'm sure there will be enough.

Rahsaan - The only vegetarian dishes I've tried there are Eggplant/stringbean w/garlic sauce which is good and the Bean sprouts with pickled vegetables which is very good. Since the Mapo Tofu was wonderful I'd expect either of the vegetarian tofu dishes to be good choices(Braised Tofu Nuggets and Savory Battered Tofu).

Stir Fried Cabbage, Tofu Skin w/Green Pepper (spicy), sauteed broccoli, vegetable yellow curry and wok fried you choi are wild cards. There are also some appetizers and noodle dishes which are probably vegetarian, we can ask.

6pm is the best-case most-optimistic scenario indeed!

I guess we can't change to another day? And the rest of us can start at 6pm and you'll let us know if there are any delays...

Jay, thanks for the menu insight. I'm sure I'll be fine. I'm pescatarian and am actually not afraid of meat, so I often get the original (non-vegetarian) Mapo Tofu and limit how much meat I put on the plate. I've just never eaten meat regularly, so can't eat large hunks, like steak.

I guess no need for wine coordination? I was thinking of bringing 2015 Falkenstein Auslese and a red wine. I know people sometimes go Burgundy but seems a bit delicate. Was thinking 2012 ESJ or Texier from roughly that time period.

Thanks for the flexibility, guys. I appreciate it. Yes, in the interest of time, I had best not travel with wine. Since I don’t want to be that guy who always shows up jeebs empty handed, I will either buy the food or send wine ahead of time (no wine list to order from).

Rahsaan - I toyed with the idea of Monday, but it’s both a holiday and I’ll be beholden to the lawyers im working with and can’t assume an ending time (also, the head lawyer is a wine lover and usually takes me out to dinner after). I also would love to try a Falkenstein wine as I get few opportunities to drink Riesling because Jean isn’t a fan.

See you all a week from now, airline permitting.

My favorite/recommended dishes so far. Please remember that Shanghainese food tends toward the sweetish side of things.

Roasted Quails
Wine Marinated Chicken
Mapo Tofu
Braised Pork Meatballs (Arnold doesn't care for this one)
Salt & Pepper Pork Hock (I can only eat a little but Arnold loves it)
Bean Sprouts with pickled vegetables
Soy Braised Chicken Leg

I've pre-ordered the Beggars Chicken which requires 24 hours advance notice. It's a deboned chicken, stuffed and roasted.

I've avoided most of the noodle and dumpling dishes for obvious reasons but they look good. Probably makes sense to get some for the table. Arnold tells me the Yellow Croaker Fish Noodle Soup is really good though perhaps inappropriate for a wine dinner.

They have a new whole cod dish which we can try if people like.

Looking forward to this. I've been trying to organize a wine dinner here since November.

Mark - I'll bring some extra glasses for you.

I like quail. And noodles. The chicken legs also sound good. A whole cod averages 6-12 pounds so are we enough people for that? (On the other hand, Shanghai has access to both fresh water and salt water fish so their fish cuisine is quite yummy.)

Welcome aboard, Don.

I'll see if I can bring some riesling, too.

And I have a low-alcohol beverage for Arnold to try! (...and the rest of us...)

All those dishes sound wonderful, Jay, but let's make sure to have a fish item or two on there for Rahsaan. If the mapo tofu uses Sichuan peppercorns, I'm not sure how it would play with wine. As I said above, I'd be happy to send some wine to you ahead of time should you think that it would be useful. I have some older Rieslings (Prum, Schaeffer, Mullen) that I'd be happy to contribute as well as a '14 Pinon Deronnieres and a couple of Huet 1er Tries ('96, '02). Oh, and a few hundred bottles of various red wines, too. Just let me know.

Glad to hear that Don can join in.

Mark, there is no shortage of wine here. But if you have something that you would like to taste -- and Tuesday's dinner with Jean is not an option -- then, yes, send it over!

FWIW, I'll be locked into opening the ESJ 2012 Fenaughty Syrah. Based on recent experiences, it needs to be decanted off sediment, so I'll do that at home. But unless anyone has objections/adamant feelings about other themes, that should be fine.

Those all sound great though IMO there’s no need to avoid red wines
Don't worry! I hear that Mark has hundreds of them. We're just trying to get riesling into the lad before he starts showing symptoms of withdrawal.
