North Fork Punishment?

Going to the North Fork next week for some nice cold winter coastal time (my North Sea-raised wife will feel right at home).

Am considering visiting wineries, but it appears their whole reserve-a-table-and-eat-some-commercial-food-while-choking-down-our-'wines' schtick is not what I am accustomed to from other regions.

Should I do it anyway? Any tips?

No. Plus, I cannot imagine that anyone is open for tours between xmas and new year's, but had you considered looking for a decent south fork restaurant in East Hampton etc. (though many close during the winter season) with a good long island wine list?

Ha!

I looked up Paumanok because I had heard of them as quality (and chenin). And their website appears to be taking reservations for these cheesy food-and-wine-tastings (but not tours) next week.

Any other names to seek?

Can’t speak to wineries, but the North Fork is lovely. Check out Orient if you have time. Pizza Rita makes great Neapolitan style pizza.

You should go and here are a few tips:

Mattituck:

Pizza Rita as mentioned, but go/buy early as evening comes early to the North Fork.
Roanoake Tasting Room on Love Lane. Have a glass while you wait to for a table at Love Lane Kitchen

Jamesport:

Main Road Biscuit - Breakfast and Lunch only
Paumaonk Vineyards - The Chenin is drinkable, may have local oysters on Saturday
Cliffs Elbow Room - If you want the real North Fork experience

Greenport:

Little Creek Oysters - for very local oysters but why they don't have muscadet is beyond me.
Kontakosta Winery - go if the weather is nice and walk out the back in the field to the view of Long Island Sound, can't recommend the wine
Inlet Pond County Park - pleasant easy walk to view Long Island Sound
Alpina Restaurant - good food and drinkable wines

Others:

Sparkling Pointe Vineyards - If bubbles is your thing. I do like the B de B

The North Fork is lovely and a much different vibe than the South Fork, you'll be able to get in wherever you like, though call ahead to make sure places are open. The food is much better IMO. Unfortunately the wine is made for wine tourism, so go and be a tourist and enjoy.

Jason,

Thanks for all of that! We're actually staying in Greenport and my wife was just saying today that we need to have oysters before we leave. Will try to stop by Little Creek Oysters tomorrow. Not entirely clear if they are open. Which is a general theme. But we are doing fine regardless.

And in case this thread ever comes up in the search function, I highly recommend this spot in Orient. Only two or three shops on the little street and this one does a pretty good job of suiting my sensibilities, with nice dumplings and Asian-inspired salads as well as French-inspired crepes (owners are a couple, he from France, she Chinese-American). Gelato as well, but no need for us to sample that in these temps!
