The Gray Lady weighs in on SF dining

I told her that she needed to open a restaurant where I live...she just laughed. Almost made me think she might be receptive, but I quickly came to my senses.

Chinese food advice for the East Bay?

I really like Wojia Hunan Cuisine in Albany. Steamed fish head was really good. I also enjoyed the glutinous rice balls.

It's been a couple of years since I've been, but I imagine standards are still high there.

Sichuan Style in Berkeley is pretty good, but I think Wojia is more interesting and has edgier dishes with ingredients you don't find in most other restaurants.

And of course, Great China in Berkeley.

thank you Yule. and i might be interested in joining you at Sushi Yoshizumi. but the long drive back to Yountville is a problem. and i would maybe only have one glass given a drive home late in the evening...

For sure, let me know when you want to go to Yoshizumi. Getting reservations can be tricky (usually you need to grab them on Tock within 2 minutes of them being released -- they usually release reservations two weeks in advance every Wednesday night), but usually I have had luck getting reservations for Wednesdays or Thursday at the 8pm window. Weekends are impossible.

Yule. only weekdays i can attend would be in the last week of November (after Thanksgiving) and last week of December. Not real good choices. January looks open. Best day is probably Wednesday in general. but i would need to pass on a dinner time later than 6:30pm. just too darn late to trek back to Yountville! so perhaps we will not be able to meet....das ist aber schade!

Let's shoot for January -- it should be doable to get an early slot on a Wednesday (I think the early service starts around 5pm/5:30pm).

Though its so unpredictable. I remember logging in exactly at 9pm when the reservations get released and still not being able to snag one. I swear people must be using bots.

great! if it helps, i can try as well.

Cool, let's touch base late December/January and we can strategize (I can't believe I'm saying "strategize" to get restaurant reservations, lol)

Also consistently good food at Wood Tavern--they are only running a single fresh pasta now, but it is very good. And their sister restaurant down on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland is also consistently good, and possessing of a slightly better wine list.

Mark Lipton -- I've been off Disorder for a while, but am thrilled to hear you'll be out here next semester. The Bay Area is still a great place to be and eat, notwithstanding the narrative heard in some national media. Wood Tavern's sister restaurant is The Wolf, which you'll probably remember as Bay Wolf. My Burgundy group eats there monthly. I can generally do wine dinners there with no corkage. I'm also looking forward to some fun jeebs!

Rintaro has already captured hearts, minds and gastrointestinal tracts of the many who frequent this space, and the huge plus of being next door to Rainbow Grocery (don't sleep on the Franklin teleme).

As I get a little older, an early dinner at Rintaro followed by shopping around 8 at Rainbow Grocery for the upcoming week is such a joy. Quiet time at the restaurant, quiet time at Rainbow. What could be better?
