Sad news

I don't know the backstory of why he stopped posting, but I felt his absence. Brilliant guy. Really bummed now I missed a dinner with him. Condolences to all family and friends.

Terrible news. Discussing almost anything with Thor was a good time, even when one disagreed with him. Maybe especially when one disagreed with him, he kept us on our (mental) toes. And he had a great sense of humor; I especially remember one jolly dinner with him at a marvelous prix fixe, one menu only Chinese restaurant in SF. (Anyone remember the name of that place, basically a one woman show with no menu, you just got whatever looked good to the chef at the market that day?)

Thor leaves a very unique shaped hole.

Well, according to him he was booted from this site. I don’t know the details, either, except that it wasn’t his choice to leave.

In a way, it's very simple: he and Dressner did not get along, to put it mildly, and, as it's Dressner's board....

The details are rather more sordid ("involving ignoble actions and motives; arousing moral distaste and contempt" -Merriam-Webster).

Unless the powers deleted it, the aggression remains preserved in amber, available to all who type whatever the magic words are into the search function.

I've been in touch with Thor's family and they asked me to post that his autopsy report revealed that he had a heart attack due to cardiovascular disease. The medical examiner said it would have been quick and he most likely did not suffer.
If anyone is close to Philadelphia area there will eventually be a memorial service. I will post the details when I know about them.

Thanks, Bill. I’ll appreciate getting the details, though it’s a long shot as to whether I could attend a memorial service in Philly.

Quite sad to hear this news, but not inappropriate to learn of it on a wine forum. He was one of the first people I “met” via this mode of conversation. I always got along with him just fine over the course of our mutual matriculations through various fora and I enjoyed our F2F dinings and drinkings whenever he’d pass through LA. Sure, he could be prickly (the best ones are) but our shared appreciation for Alsace wines kept things copacetic, although my stylistic preference for Ostertag and Zind-Humbrecht vs. his Hugel and Trimbach benchmarks engendered some not-overly confrontational conversations. Perhaps our shared enthusiasm for puns (words for words’ sake) kept us simpatico and civil over the 20+ years we were in touch.
