Is Everyone Off Attending the Inauguration Today?

Ever seen a red/blue map of the US by county, instead of by state? I saw one for 2000 and it made it very clear: any place on a coast or major waterway voted blue, any place in the sticks voted red. I took that to mean that it was all about whether you encounter foreigners/strangers often.

I think this is about right. We are all born xenophobic, and we adjust only as much as we have to.

Not born. You've got to be carefully taught.

Just a beer. May have had a little too much last night. I did end the evening with a 2004 heinrich Mayr Nusserhof Sudtirol Lagrein that I thought was good, but my wife was smitten with.

Me, I'm sipping a pinot noir from Brazil. Miolo Family Vineyards. Nothing special, very simple, but kind of cheerful and easygoing. And nine bucks.

The Sonoma Coast (Of Brazil?)?
Me, it was '07 Chignin-Bergeron "Les Terrasses" from the ubiquitous Quenard. Wow. A honey of a wine, with (you will kindly excuse the expression) echoes of Narcissus... and that's just the nose!!!

Brazil's Sonoma Valley, according to the label. Apparently in Portuguese it means "Valley of the Moon."

I heard all the stuff all day about our peaceful transfer of power in the US, and it made me a little wistful. Couldn't we have roughed those guys up just a bit on the way out?

Where I'm from such roughing up would have been a strict requisite.

I drank something very tight by Taittinger.

And, happy as I was about the whole thing, I found the whole Inauguration-and-related-parties thing curiously unfunky, all things considered. Beyonc should stay away from Etta James' material. And Etta James could have sung. Would have been nice.

And don't get me started on the "hip hop". All they could come up with was Kanye West and will-i-am? Haven't they heard W-Tip is back?

Jackson -- "The devil himself"

For some reason that thought passes through my mind every time I look at a $20 bill.

There's an "Andrew Jackson Steakhouse" just around the corner from my place of work here in sunny Santo Domingo. Then again, there's also a "Hitler Driving School". In fact, I once had a tailor named Mussolini, but he prefered to be called "Muso". It's only a matter of time before someone names something after Mr. Bush.

This Caribbean life is very picturesque...

Agreed. Beyonc may be famous, but she is not a star. In my opinion.

Not to mention the advantages climate-wise right now. For the record, what types of businesses bear Trujillo's name in Santo Domingo? Mercado el chivo, maybe?

(anxiously awaiting the next novel by Junot Daz)

Didn't the supreme court at that time rule the internment of the Japanese was legal?

Yes.

To the victor go the spoils....

Add to this the fire bombing of Tokyo killing more initially than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, judgment is made by those who judge.

And what is all the bullshit about states rights? Why stop at county lines. Let's go block by block, house by house.
