CWD : 1985 Pepe Montepulciano

Mark Anisman

Fruit very expressive on the nose & palate. cherry/plum. great depth & complexity.
marred by poor balance - way too much acid (not volatile). less abusive with food naturlich, but still too much. Marico's cogent statement : "sour".
variability? a wonderful wine if I was at a country inn, but I blanch at the thought of this exceeding 30 euros.
and surprisingly, unlike Germans that fridge overnight, acidity still prominent the next day.

Try a multiple of like, 4-6 times that for this vintage in the US.

-Eden (for that kind of money, I would expect at least want some volatile acidity and maybe even a little brett to complain about)

Ha! Someone on this board actually complaining about too much acid?
This has to be a first!
I'm still waiting to try my first Bepe. Anyone here have an idea how well the 2001's are performing?

I've actually really liked this wine in the past. Go figure. However, like LDH, there's a lot of bottle variation with Pepe, imo and the prices here are kindah nuts. But, when you get a good one, they're pretty great.

A lot more variation with Pepe than LdH, unless you're talking about the very old bottles of LdH.

Well, the last two LDH I've tried, a '73 Tondonia and '81 Bosconia have beeen off. Not corked, just bad bottles. There's no denying there's a lot of variation with LDH. Let's not forget the day Manuel brought three corked LDH wines to one tasting.

The '95 Trebbianos that I've had were fantastic, so I was eager to try some of the Montepulciano. Unfortunately the only ones I found were the '01s which I suspect are years away from ready.

There is variation in most wines that are 30+ years old. Corked counts in a different column.

I really like this wine, though in my experience the bottle variation is quite extreme. Some are so poopy you just want to wrap them up in diapers and toss them at your noisy neighbors. Others are glorious. Go figure.

In regards to the 1985 Pepe Montepulciano, I'm 4 good bottles to 1 bad bottle. That reverses my record for 1989 Huet 1er Trie, so I'm happy.

(I think the one bad bottle was opened by dal Piaz, so I didn't feel too much remorse)
