DC winos?

First time I went to an offline with total strangers; now I hope there will be more.
Given the personalities around here, you'll probably get your wish even if your next time is with the exact same folk.

No, there were lots of good wines, though due to the guest list and the combination of cosmic forces there was an unusual amount of taint/off bottles and slightly off food. 1997 Jaboulet Cornas and 1988 Montevertine were nice as was the 2005[?] Pfalz Riesling that Georg brought and the 2004 Tissot Traminer. My 97 Steiner Hund Spatlese got weird after a few hours (CWC import) and my 93 Chevillon Cailles which seemed great when it was opened turned out to be intensely corked. 1993 Jadot Chapelle Chambertin seemed a bit tight and unyielding and a Fevre Chablis was also corked. Georg's 2002 Schwartzburgunder (same Pfalz producer whose name I did not write down) was nothing to write home about. And there was a lovely 1993 Baudry. And a Michigan wine [Wycroft?](Bordeaux blend) that might have benefited from a more carefully thought out barrel program.

But surely someone else will have more interesting things to say.

Cole

Cole has it mostly right.

It was a doomed night. I had car trouble, and traffic trouble on my way there. There were several corked and heat damaged wines.

I expect the clipped aspect of the Jadot Chapelle was heat damage and I agree with you on the Nikolaihof. I also thought the Montevertine Riserva may have noit been treated with the utmost kindness, but the roasted quality of the wine could also be due to how the vintage is evolving. I just expect 1988s, especially Montevertine, to be a little more lithe and less dark.

The 1993 Baudry (Domaine) was really good and surprising. Maybe Chinon follows the Dougherty postulate about chenin.

The 2001 Prum Wehlener Kabinet started strong but seemed to fade into diffusion as the night went on.

I didn't like the Jaboulet at all.

The Dal Forno was beautiful as always. The 1988 Deiss SGN was a disaster too. Not sure what happened there. Maybe the heat damage gods again.

The food was...well...Lavandou minus.

The company was excellent and it was nice to see you guys again and meet Georg and Ian.

Fucking newbies.

Good time. Sorry that you had auto issues, Nathan. I trust you made it back to Reston without incident.(?)

I think you were right about the Steiner Hund suffering from some poor storage, though I found it alternately enjoyable and interesting, nonetheless.

The Baudry was quite good. Ian, the thing about it being a middle cuvee comes from something I read a long time ago. Frederich, perhaps. I certainly didn't mean to say that any particular cuvee by Baudry is inferior to any other. They are all quite good. And I think that a lot of A-S-T CabFrs age splendidly.

There was also a 2004 Alois Trebulanum opened. My fault. Never had a varietal Casavecchia wine before. Not many at the table tried it, though. While interesting, it may suffer a bit from ambitious wine-making. Maybe five or so years will smooth it out. I could stand being a little leaner.

The Deiss was disappointing. OTH? Cooked? It should have been better.

The cork imps have been hounding me lately. So it was probably my fault about the Fevre and Chevillon. I really liked the Pfalz Riesling that Georg brought. And the other wines that others have mentioned, too.

We boys were pretty shameless about the recioto. Poor Queen Bee had to settle for a glassful of dregs.

I did. They're playing WTF with the car at the dealership right now.

It wasn't ruined by overly ambitious wine-making. Has it improved at all after being open?

Queen Bee

We have to make sure that sticks.
