2007 Clos Roche Blanche Gamay - will this age?

My first time buying and drinking this wine that I can remember. I had heard many good things about this QPR. I was kind of shocked to see an artificial cork as I bought a few with the idea of laying some down. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is interesting with boysenberries, concentrated cranberry juice and a bit of cherry soda. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, this is nice, not overtly ripe, but certainly not under ripe. Easy and smooth to drink with a nice mouthfeel. 12% Alc which is great. Not a whole lot of complexity at this point but plenty of value for the money.

So can this be laid down to age? Even with the artificial closure?

I've held a few and I prefer them fresh. It's not that the aged ones are bad - I brought a 2000 to this year's Toledo - it's just that I don't see enough evolution to make it a worthwhile exercise for me. I'm working from a relatively small sample size, plus you can add vintage variation, etc. to decrease the utility of my conclusion even further.

As several have noted, others have had problems aging wines with those spongy plastic corks too.

That being said, I just enjoyed my last 2005 and it was vital, life-affirming, invigorating juice.

Cheers,

Dave

For what it's worth, I had a 2003 about a month ago that was just delicious, absolutely slurpable. Hadn't really changed noticeably from release, though.

If you do age the wine you have to give it the full decade or, as Chris says, it will taste pretty much just like it does now except it will need an hour of air to get there. That's been my experience. The '97s are coming along wonderfully.

The fake corks . . . I don't have any faith.

I don't know, I thought the 2002s were improving a bit with lesser amounts of age. Opened my last one about 2(?) years ago.

The 2002s do seem to have lost the nasty geranium/beet green note that mine had, so I guess that's an improvement. I think I still have 3 left, and am actually looking forward to them now.

I've got some closing in on 10 years with '01 and '02 still in the cellar. Guess I'll leave them for experimentation's sake.

Cheers,

Dave
