CRB 2006 Cuvee Cot

Kevin Roberts
2006 Clos Roche Blanche Cuvee Cot:

On occasion, I actually drink wine...

Initially rather tannic and and dense, but with a bit more air the nose bloomed and was rather pretty, violets, lean and mean. Goregous minerality. On day 2 was perhaps leaner and more mineral. Less tannic, softer, and good god this is minerally. This is rocking now, but seeing that I found it more interesting on day 2, suggests some decent longevity.

Is the Clos Roche Blanche estate fairly contiguous? For my money, I can't think of an estate that has more house character, and not really in the "wines are made the same way" way, the wines all taste like they're grown in the same dirt. I've probably only had a half dozen or so different CRB wines, but the minerality may manifest itself a bit differently in each of the wines, but they all taste like they're all from the same patch of dirt. And I love it. I know I'm doing a bit of preaching to the choir here, as there's no shortage of CRB love here, but damn I enjoyed that wine. And the dirt.

Cheers,

Kevin

I have a mental block about wines made from cot, because in German the word Kot means poop. But I may have to get over it and start trying some of them.

Jim,

I bought it for a discounted $17.50 from CSW when they had their moving sale. I think that was 20% off regular retail. Add the $3 per bottle shipping, and that would make it $20.50 delivered. Insert smiley. If I recall correctly standard price was $21.99 at the time.

Under real cork by the way.

cheers,

Kevin

Kevin,
most of the estate is quite contiguous on the hill above the floodplain of the Cher, although there is a piece of it with similar soil and exposition across the valley of a tributary. Someone can remind me, but I think the Pineau d'Aunis is over there.

I used to joke about the wines' being monotonous. A strong family resemblance for sure.

You should drink their malbec instead.
I'm partial to the auxerrois.

Thanks for the note Kevin, I've been wondering how this is doing. I neglected to order some from Chambers during that sale, figuring it would be available here in the bay area eventually. Finally received an offer for some last week.

Ha ha. Thanks for reminding me, though, since I have yet to taste a malbec-dominated wine that does not put me off. Probably some oddity in my physiological makeup.

cahors is where malbec is known as auxerrois.

seems as though a priest came down from auxerre with a grape that was common up there and told the locals that this is the grape that jesus wanted them to grow. well, the locals didn't like the wine from the new grape, so renamed their beloved cot auxerrois and went back to the red wine they had been making before divine intervention intruded into their lives.

this story was told to me by the vigneron from domaine cayrou. as i recall, the grape the priest brought down was white--not sure if it was chardonnay, aligote, or something else.
