Let's talk about VA

Things like diacetyl and amyl acetate have different notes in different concentrations.

So do thiols. E.g. a majority of the populace perceives eau de skunk as an attractive odor when presented with it in low (ppt) concentrations.

nope, Jeff, you have misstated your case. i merely answered Yixin's question. i detect barnyard, soapiness, etc., in wines frequently, and yet, depending on the degree, it does not usually put me off. fecal would, but that really depends on the taster. my point was one can learn to like just about anything (emphasis on "just about").

VA tends to cross the line for when I get a strong odor of cheap overripe table grapes in the wine along with everything else. I've heard other people echo the same sentiment before.

Are you a nail-doer?

I wish it didn't bother me as much as it does, because it closes off entire categories of wine to me, or very nearly so: Madeira, Tokaji, and the majority of sweet and/or dried-grape reds. I find this unacceptable, but I don't have a solution.

I'm fine with it as a "lifted" note in certain whites, though my definition of "note" in this case is probably lower than most.

Calling Penfolds Grange....

Now there was a wine that polarised opinions due to deliberate levels of VA, especially in the rigorous 'academic' climate of Australian wine shows (when it was still entered). Hooke's biography of Max Schubert tells of one occasion when two of the judges were awarding the wine (the 71 vintage?) a gold medal (19/20 points or whatever) whereas the third was scoring it at 13.0 and calling it out-and-out faulty.
cheers,
Graeme

we are talking sauvignon blanc here. not ass-fucking. learning doesn't come into it.
