2006 Port

Is 2006 a declared vintage? I don't think so, but don't pay attention so don't know for sure. I'm pretty sure 2005 was declared, so 2006 wouldn't be.

In still reds, 2006 is probably the worst vintage we have tasted so far (we have been doing 1 or 2 annual tastings in elmundovino from the 99-00 vintage)

Have not tasted any port so far, and have not investigated, but chances are that few or no wineries will declare

You? Port? Why do you care? (or is the 'Translucency Report' merely a guise??)

Friend had baby in 2006 (not mine) and she is looking to buy wine for it. She was thinking Port and I told her I didn't think 2006 had been a declared year.

The vlm-tr only endorses Chinato and Centerba.

I feel cheated as well: my daughter was born that year and - so far - I haven't come up with any good 20-year wines either.

Better 2006 Burgundies should do that easily. Unlike 2005 which will *need* 20 years.

???? C'mon, Mark. Go for the C9dPs -- they'll make it 20+ easily, d00d. And there are some good choices to be had in Burgundy and the N. Rhone, too. Heck, even some of the tougher Cru Beaujolais could go the distance in '06. Just be glad she wasn't born in '03 or '97.

Like Jay said, Burgundy and I'll add Tuscany.

Esmonin Clos St Jacques for example. 2006 Pergole Torte or Felsona Rancia. Brunello's too, if you like them.

Barolo. Wines will be released next year, very good vintage for many producers. Giacosa excepted.

vlm's last post had some great picks too though.

Oh, yes? You have tasted a lot of 2006 Brunello, have you?

What Chinato and Centerbes are you drinking?

The NYC chapter of Amaro Dudes wants to know.

Who cares. Port is dead.

No, just extrapolating from what I have tried. So, in that vein, take it for what it's worth.

What I drink regularly is Vergano Luli, which makes a spectacular summer beverage with a bit of sparkling water.

I'm mostly limited tot he Dressner portfolio, so Roagna, Capellano and Vergano. I'm sure nothing that you don't already have.

Unfortunately, the Centerba supply has dried up. Ken used to get it from his peoples in the Abruzzo hills, but can't seem to anymore. Hopefully his dad will bring some back from his trip.

I am told that there was a time when one could find the Latte di Suocera centerbes (the one with the skull and crossbones on the label, by the Zanini distillery) in NYC, but I think it has been awhile. I did find some in Japan when I was there. Unfortunately, that which I tried to bring back was confiscated and destroyed (or drunk by the confiscators).

Anyway, I ask because I would search it out if it were available somewhere a bit, you know, closer to home.

Have you read Libation by Deirde Heekin? It is almost impossible to read through because of the style of the author, but you can pick up some good tidbits on the amari family if you skim pages. The alkermes and rosolio sections are particularly helpful.
