2002 V Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru La Forest

drssouth

Stephen South
2002 Vincent Dauvissat (Ren & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest, alc 13%...promising pale yellow color...apple and pear on the nose...rich with some quince and a gentle nuttiness on the palate... I love the richness and the acidity....long smooth finish...no premature anything (except consumption)...

Glad to hear it's showing strong. I don't get around to drinking much Chablis but I loved a few bottles of this a few years ago.

I find this to be a very reliable "stand-by" and have several more in the wings

Quite a good level of stand-by wine.

What can I say... of the 111 Chardonnay based wines in my cellar, 81 are from France and 55 are Chablis...love the stuff!!

Only 81 are from France?

Really?

Who else is making good Chardonnay these days? I mean if it has some Nebbiolo blended in I'm cool with it, but otherwise...

Well, that's the premox conundrum, bottles are either free of any signs of abnormal development or they aren't and it's impossible to know till you pull the cork. A beautiful bottle offers no assurance about other bottles of the same wine. It's a bottle by bottle slog through the trenches. Congratulations on your good fortune with this one.

Chardonnay based? How many are blended? Excluding Champagne...

No blended except Champagne, 3 Jura, 1 sw France, 1 Oregon, US/CA producers represented by Walter Hansel (low oak, more Burgundy-ish) then some Brewer-Clifton and Ramey for a good friend who prefers this style of wine..

I was kinda being facetious in that almost chardonnay is just that. "Based" implies the major component of a blend and that's pretty rare, chardonnay is usually mono cepage. Although some might say those CA ones are blended with wood...

I've opened a few 00s and 02s. They've been fine.

I choose not to be gloomy about Dauvissat.

In the US both Rhys and Arcadian are doing nice things with chardonnay.

I hope that streak continues for you, I've had DOA bottles from both years. I don't know if you are aware of this but folks post about bottles they open. Over time a picture is developing.
