Three recent favorites: Derthona, Lapierre, Briailles

Slaton Lipscomb
2007 Vigneti Massa Timorasso 'Derthona' Colli Tortonesi has a viscous appearance in the glass, and attractive oily lemon-lime, green apple, mineral and almond aromatics. Surprising intensity on the palate, with a delightfully penetrating riesling-ish acid structure and fresh, cool-toned lemon-lime, white fruits and bitter almond. There's gentle sweetness (as in fruit, rather than rs) and a very waxy, palate-coating texture.

This is really a fascinating and unique wine, one I think would have particular appeal for riesling and romorantin heads. It's probably the most interesting white I've tasted from Piedmont.

2008 Marcel Lapierre Morgon has arrived at Kermit's shop, and what a delight it is. The mesmerizingly complex nose brings a cascade of shape-shifting aromas that seem to cycle from tart red berries, to blood orange, mineral, rust/iron, pine needle, floral violet/lilac, rhubarb and back again. The palate is juicy with bright acidity and gorgeously fresh, mouthwatering blood orange-like fruit and mineral flavors.

On first glance, this is lighter and less textural than '05 or '06, almost water-weight in the mouth, with flavors that linger for just a bit. But it adds a bit of flesh and gentle structure with a couple of hours of air, so I suspect a few short months will bring about the more typical Lapierre textural snap. Who cares though, really. The freshness today is to die for and the ripeness just seems perfect. This is one of those wines I feel I can't possibly drink enough of.

2006 Chandon des Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses was enjoyed recently with a few other disorderlies. The case could be made that it was far too young to be opened and maximally enjoyed. The case could also be made that it was wonderful and delicious.

Unfortunately the latter case could not be made for the dinner accompanying our wines on that particularly evening.

Lovely sentiments. I feel the same way about the bottles of this that I have been drinking recently. As I do about the 2006 Fritz Haag wines I have opened tonight..

And thanks for the notes about the Lapierre. Always fun.

Em was a little sick, and i had the full on toilet worship at 3am thing going on. I'm attributing it to the kentucky fried mushrooms (or snow fungus or whatever the hell it was) because i tasted rancid oil for several days.

Wow.

Yes, "wow." Plus the service was surly. Maybe the worst meal I've ever paid good money for.

So you were eating at slaton's?

Well, I don't exactly expect to be coddled at Mission Street Food.

But I'm with you on the food, with the KFC Extra Crispy snow mushrooms being a particular low point.

I'll never order two orders of something again without first tasting it.

Of course. Good wines + good company make any meal a success. It wouldn't be the worst meal of my life if the food stayed where it was supposed to. We also drank some 2004 Goisot Fie Gris, 01 huet at room temperature, and some burgundy Arjun bought that i can't for the life of me remember.

It's tough to attribute food poisoning reliably, as I said recently to a friend, unless you have the CDC pitching in. The various pathogens have incubation periods that vary between 1 and 48 hours, so it can be difficult to be sure who did you down.

It was very nice. I felt it was on the downhill slightly, but it's got this minerally Burgundy thing going on that is quite surprising.

Joe: This is true. Even without that the food sucked.

We opened an 06 Chandon de Briailles Savigny Fornaux the other night that was no particular joy. Not bad, but too much dirt and either no depth or very closed. Probably the latter, but without the fat of an Ile de, which is supposed to be a significantly finer terroir, to make it fun for youthful ingestion.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, and thanks for the note! Sorry to hear about the attendant food woes.

Sorry to hear that, Ian. The '07 was really nice from barrel, lots of structure and grip. If the price point is OK, try holding one for a year or three.
