2007 Vigneti Massa Timorasso 'Derthona' Colli Tortonesi has a viscous appearance in the glass, and attractive oily lemon-lime, green apple, mineral and almond aromatics. Surprising intensity on the palate, with a delightfully penetrating riesling-ish acid structure and fresh, cool-toned lemon-lime, white fruits and bitter almond. There's gentle sweetness (as in fruit, rather than rs) and a very waxy, palate-coating texture.
This is really a fascinating and unique wine, one I think would have particular appeal for riesling and romorantin heads. It's probably the most interesting white I've tasted from Piedmont.
2008 Marcel Lapierre Morgon has arrived at Kermit's shop, and what a delight it is. The mesmerizingly complex nose brings a cascade of shape-shifting aromas that seem to cycle from tart red berries, to blood orange, mineral, rust/iron, pine needle, floral violet/lilac, rhubarb and back again. The palate is juicy with bright acidity and gorgeously fresh, mouthwatering blood orange-like fruit and mineral flavors.
On first glance, this is lighter and less textural than '05 or '06, almost water-weight in the mouth, with flavors that linger for just a bit. But it adds a bit of flesh and gentle structure with a couple of hours of air, so I suspect a few short months will bring about the more typical Lapierre textural snap. Who cares though, really. The freshness today is to die for and the ripeness just seems perfect. This is one of those wines I feel I can't possibly drink enough of.
2006 Chandon des Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des Vergelesses was enjoyed recently with a few other disorderlies. The case could be made that it was far too young to be opened and maximally enjoyed. The case could also be made that it was wonderful and delicious.
Unfortunately the latter case could not be made for the dinner accompanying our wines on that particularly evening.
