tn 2001 Pavelot Savigny les Beaunes aux Guettes

Cherry jello red, smells pinoty, bit of leather, bit of ... plum? Pretty closed, but good acidity, umami and tongue-cosseting texture, in a good way. Drying tannins. Maybe better in a hour or so, maybe in a couple of years.

I saw some Pavelot Pernand Vergelesses En Caradeux the other day, which surprised me. I thought Jadot had a monopole there. Has anyone tried the Pavelot Pernands?

Ian - Jadot has Clos de la Croix de Pierre as a monopole that is part of En Caradeux, similar to Grivault's Clos des Perrires being a monopole although part of the Meursault-Perrires appellation or Jadot's Beaune-Clos des Ursules being a monopole although the appellation is Vignes Franches and there are other Vignes Franches owners. For En Caradeux, there are lots of other producers besides R. Pavelot and Jadot, e.g., Follin-Arbelet, Rollin, Rapet, Chanson.

The Pavelot who has En Caradeux is Rgis Pavelot from Pernand-Vergelesses. Was his the Guettes that you had or was it the Guettes of Jean-Marc and Hughes Pavelot? Your description makes me think it was Rgis -- matches with the style of his wines that I've tasted. Nothing wrong with his wines, but I prefer those of Jean-Marc & Hughes who are really top drawer.

Ain't Burgundy simple?

Merci, Claude. Let's face it, the complexity is half the fun.

The Aux Guettes was Jean-Marc and Hughes Pavelot. I think 2001 was a tough year for Beaune - wasn't there hail? - but don't now the degree to which SlB was affected. Anyway, a little toughness does not seem out of place, and as the wine opened over the course of the evening, the tannins ceased to dominate the finish.

The seller bills the en Cardeux as 'Jean-Marc Pavelot,' but don't present the right label. They're reputable, so I imagine they are merely confused.

Cheers.

Jean-Marc and Hughes Pavelot have only les Vergelesses at Pernand (which Rgis has, too, just as both have Guettes in Savigny). It's not uncommon to confuse the two, especially as relatively few are aware that there are two separate Pavelot domaines.

2001 was at its worst on Cte Chalonnaise (especially Bouzeron), Meursault part of Auxey, Monthlie, and Volnay, where hail was just disastrous (Jacques d'Angerville joked when I came to visit in 2002 that he had no wine to show). Still, there were some decent wines made there. From there on, the further north one went, the better the wines got, and Savigny is already quite a bit separated from that area, so it was quite a decent vintage there. Savignys can be slow to open, so 2001 might still be on the young side.

Well, Guettes is reputed to be a bit tough, que no? Perhaps I am not giving these bottles enough time. Though I thought this one was in striking distance of being ready.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, Claude.

Did the hail in 2001 make Cote d'Beaune bad or did it just destroy crop, resulting in less wine being made, but which still was of relatively good quality? I occasionally run across a close-out of 2001 Volnay, and was wondering whether it would be worthwhile to buy them or if I should avoid them like 2002 Southern Rhone.

I've limited experience of the lower slopes in 01 but I can report magnificent Clos Vougeot 01s from Faiveley and Grivot, and they are pretty low.

Both also have some upslope vines, but I have to say that based on many years of experience, you can't predict quality with certainty by location. BTW, why doesn't anyone ever mention the location of Leroy's CdV vines when praising the wine? It might not be in line with the perceived truth about CdV? Oh, and has anyone bothered to taste 2003 Clos-de-Vougeots?

I've been unhappy with the 2001 Volnays I've had (d'Angerville) and happy with the 2001 SLBs (Pavelot).
