Jasmin via Junguenet

I opened a '95 Cote-Rotie last night that I'd bought a case of in '97 through my former CA distributor, who'd been handling Junguenet's Rhones for awhile. It wasn't bad, a little generic-tasting, too young by a long shot. I remembered that when I'd first tasted it there was a very strong impression of brand new oak, which had struck me as most un-Jasmin-like. After a few years the wine seemed to swallow the oak pretty convincingly (though I got a whiff of it again last night, when I first yanked out the cork.)
And the cork! "Mise en Bouteilles a la Propriete!" No vintage. No Jasmin name. If I'd noticed it before, I forgot it also. Strikes me pretty weird, but is that others' experience with Jasmin wines from Junguenet?
Where are the Jasmins of yesteryear?

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with the '96? Was it always this bad?

The ones I had had serious reduction/mercaptan problems that were most unlikely to ever get better; yours?

Watery. Acidic. As if corked, but without any obvious signs over many days, so likely not (and here cue Nigel's oft-repeated lecture on same). Perhaps a very slight whiff of mercaptans, but really they were far down the list of problems. Basically, the wine sucks. Want any?

1996. the year of The Acid. great for champagne. not so good for vin rouge.

Oh, even without the doghead we can't go that crazy, can we? Some discipline is required around here wrt vintage generalizations.

What price the many, many great wines (France, I suppose we're talking) made in '96. (I hope you're not trash-talking Piemonte, for instance). Anyhow, just to name two this week, 1996 Pommard 1er Jarollieres from the Golden Chicken, and '96 Le Mont sec.

Acid in both, but no more than desired. Plenty of great wine in both.

I think we could tell this story many times, no?

The lurkers correct my odd notions of French.

OK, it's not the Golden Chicken, but I've always thought of them as my favorite Chinese takeout place in Pommard, pre-'96.

I thought 96 was better than 95 but worse than 97? It's not?

This confounded 100 point scale is so confusing to me.

Indeed: I'd add '96 Trapet Chambertin last Saturday in Big Sur (young, but not juvenile; thoroughly delicious; deep, strong with great spice and verve) and '96 D. Mortet Lavaux St. Jacques last night at Corton (more leather and brambles than the Trapet, but great balance and length and clean, clear fruit wrapped in ripe tannins) -- the latter wine was particularly nice on the PQR.

There is a lack of synchronicity between the two.

If one were to translate that, my guess is the translation might be: "hosed again..."

My 95 Jasmin came from RWC and are the bee's knees. I think yours are an archetype for bogus. I will gladly send you some for ESJ 1992 Grand Heritage.
