With friends at Cafe Campagne for New Year's Eve.

1983 Bernard Gripa SJ le Berceau - delicate, articulated nose of voilet pastilles and earth. In mouth still delicate and delineated, sous bois, aged Syrah, but not in a very feral way. A little ridge of tannin before a long, slightly leathery finish. Quite complex. A really delightful wine. It was excellent for about a half hour and then slowly started to fade, with the complexities receding and the tannin coming to the fore.

Reminds me of a '97 Grippat St. Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice I brought to a party on NYE. Cork was soaked through so maybe it was more advanced than it should have been. Neverthess, beautiful old syrah much as you describe here. Glad I have another but I hope that one has a better cork.

Was it a recent acquisition from winebid? I saw one there but forgot to get back to it to bid on it.
If so, thanks for the note, it's nice to hear about it. If not, it's interesting to hear about it anyway.

I've also had that wine - mine too seemed perhaps heat damaged - but which was lovely. This was a much different beast, less powerful, more delicate, less roasted character.
