1999 Mt. Mary Quintet

Jay Miller

Jay Miller
Yes, I know what you're thinking. Has the other Jay Miller snuck onto Wine Disorder? But this is a thoroughly lovely bottle of wine from the Yarra (not Barossa) Valley. A blend of Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet franc, Malbec, and Petit verdot, the nose says old school Bordeaux and the palate, while not lacking in fruit, is balanced and thoroughly delightful. A slight herbal note shows that he fruit wasn't left to hang long past its due date and is one element of the entrancing whole.

Many thanks to Paul Jaouen for introducing me to the producer (this was even better than the 1998 he opened). I can't justify paying full retail but I'd rather pay it for this than any of the reverse osmosissed Bordeaux selling in the same price range.

Anyway, I'm a bit depressed at the moment. The cleaning people must have used some sort of cleaning solution on my serpentine statuette as it's now pitted and has white scars on it. Damn.

Sounds really nice Jay, thanks for the note. I've not had Mount Mary yet (not a buyer at those prices), but really enjoy a lot of the reds coming out of Victoria (Yarra and elsewhere - Mount Langi makes some fantastic stuff in a similar vein from the Grampians).

Oh, no. That's terrible! I'm so sorry to hear that.

I had a Mount Mary a few years ago in Sydney. It was good, but not terrific, and probably not up to what was being asked for it. That said, it was most definitely not what most Americans think of as the aromatic/taste profile of Australian wine, and interesting enough from that standpoint. Plus, of course, Parker has absolutely savaged the winery in an unusually personal fashion.

Jay, I had no idea you'd come around to Australian wines. Good, good, I've got a few bottles I'll save to open when you're around.

If any of them say "Clarendon" on the label I cannot, on this polite and civilized board, say what you should do with them.

I have Wendouree and Mount Mary, and regular inmates of this board are welcome to drop in and partake.
You'll have to get here first, though, which will be quite a journey for most of you...
cheers,
Graeme

Who has some?

If so, I'll visit the area so you can open them.

Thanks in advance.

I do, I do!!! I also have some various Galah wines, made by Wendouree's consultant (or maybe Stephen George is their ex-consultant...everyone was kind of vague when asked about it). Drop by the next time you're in the area.

And Graeme, whereabouts in Australia are you located? I might be in a position to take you up on your offer in a few weeks.

-Eden (but tomorrow may rain,so I'll follow the sun)

I have Wendouree in Singapore. And Mt Langi Ghiran. And Leeuwin Art Series. All drinkable.

Might have a collaboration with some folks at Duke Singapore. It'd be awesome if I could go over for a bit.

I wish I knew the next time I would be getting to the south of CA. There are some things that I miss dearly.

Singapore does not allow firearms, just so you know. You'll need to give me advance notice as I'm based in Hong Kong now.

cheers,
Graeme
