No, it's never mandatory, but ruining a joke by asking of it inappropriate questions is considered a hanging offense.

Oh, I asked the question because according to some obscure Korean-American family law, choosing a JD over an MD is usually in itself a hanging offense. I somehow managed to get a reprieve. Hopefully I can get one here as well?
