...except to say, if we don't start feeding our kids correctly we are fucked. how can it be that the school system has lower bacterial standards than macdonalds!

I have no clue whether school gardens are a good idea, but I certainly wouldn't be able to decide based on this article. Why does anyone continue to publish Caitlin Flanagan?

What, you mean that rhetorical flourishes such as:

Waters, described by her biographer, Thomas McNamee, as arguably the most famous restaurateur in the United States, is, of course, the founder of Chez Panisse, in Berkeley, an eatery where the right-on, yes we can, ACORN-loving, public-option-supporting man or woman of the people can tuck into a nice table dhte menu of scallops, guinea hen, and tarte tatin for a modest 95 clamswine, tax, and oppressively sanctimonious and relentlessly conversation-busting service not included. (Ive had major surgeries in which I was less scrupulously informed about what was about to happen to me, what was happening to me, and what had just happened to me than Ive been during a dinner there.)

aren't to your liking? For shame!

Holy hell, my eyes are closing of their own accord. That is St.-Vitus'-Danceworthy bad.

Though I enjoy your smallening of the font.

(Yes, I did say "smallening.")

If I hadn't just seen a breathtaking theatrical performance of The Great Gatsby, that right there is the sort of thing that would make me want to stop writing for fear of second-hand toxicity.

(No, this is not a poll.)

One of many.

Best, Jim

This is hardly a revolutionary idea. Immigrant parents have been teaching the value of education as leading to professional occupation for some time now. Remember the old Jewish joke: the fetus is abortable until such time as it is granted its MD.

What about a JD? Does it become mandatory?

No, it's never mandatory, but ruining a joke by asking of it inappropriate questions is considered a hanging offense.

Oh, I asked the question because according to some obscure Korean-American family law, choosing a JD over an MD is usually in itself a hanging offense. I somehow managed to get a reprieve. Hopefully I can get one here as well?

Not to drift, but was a long article in the Sunday Times on a company that whose business it is to treat beef fat, separated from the cow, with ammonia, so that it can be re-added to ground beef to make - in theory - e. coli-free hamburger patties. Problem is, the plants themselves keep getting contaminated. One key purchaser of the final product: public schools. (This producer has a cameo appearance in Food Inc., by the way)

So Scott's point is right on target, however you assess that particular writer.

Is ridicule better or worse than hanging?

Q: In what way are lawyers like sperm?

[Don't peek before guessing!]

A: One in a million will turn into a human being.
