CWD: '02 L D'Or

Jean returned to town last night, so tonight was a chance to celebrate with a family dinner: smoked salmon on baguette, seared sea scallops with mango salsa, rice and corn. With all this good stuff, what better to serve than a Muscadet? The 2002 Luneau-Papin Muscadet Sevre et Main L D'Or was in a lovely place tonight: rounded minerality, lemony pineapple and great clarity. Jean, who is still phobic about aging whites, proclaimed it a "great wine" and drank it even after I revealed its age. Who needs Chablis when Melon can be this good?

For the scallops, rice, and corn, sure. But for my tastes, minerally and sleek Muscadet can sometimes clash and feel tinny with the smoked fish.

Good to hear about this one, as I haven't tasted it in nearly three years. Have just one bottle left - would you recommend holding onto it for a few more years?

2002? Tell Jean it's OK, that's not aged.

I was waiting for that quip. Anyone who's ever introduced new foods to a child can tell you that you start out simple and build on your successes. She turned up her nose at the '97 L D'Or rerelease, so I figured that '02 would be a good "gateway" wine. The way I see it, it's still a couple of years before she'll be able to drink a '93 CSH with an open mind.

Interesting, Rahsaan. I admit that I don't much experience pairing Muscadet with smoked fish -- I usually go for Riesling or GV -- but I'd think that the acidity would serve it well in such a match. YMMV, of course.
