Restaurants in Sonoma, Sonoma

Ha! My memory may be failing me, but hasn't Lou weighed in on restaurants in the town proper more than once in the past?
Yes. I was really just trying to channel a typical Kessler response. Maybe I should have left out a closing quote tag or something.

LaSalette remains my best choice for dining.

Estate is second.

Jack,
Where are these two in relation to the square?
Thanks, Jim

Since Hoke Harden moved from Sonoma to Portland Oregon last year we don't travel that much to eat in Sonoma. Cafe La Haye like Mark mentioned has always been good. Haven't been to La Salette in a long time but always interesting. If you friends have a few bucks to spend and don't mind a little driving, Cyrus is the best restaurant in the valley to our West. It's not The French Laundry but it's very good.

I like the Girl and the Fig but much prefer the Fig Cafe (20 minutes north in Glen Ellen) same owner but no corkage, ever and similar bistro style food. They do have a wine list - all Rhone varietals. They don't take reservations so get there by 6:00 pm on the weekends.
I quite enjoyed the Fig Cafe, and the wine list (though I noticed some quite interesting non-Rhonish things on there - recollect having an 01 Scavino Barolo off the list that was lovely even if it was years too young).

I didn't realize. And yes on Cyrus. I'm always surprised how much I like it. I kinda hate the feeling of the place though. Mostly because of the pretension of the caviar and champagne cart. Ugh. If I ever offer caviar with condiments on a menu, I will price it and present it as something approachable, an affordable splurge. Not some fucking Louis Vuitton of food.

What are people's objections to the girl & the fig? I haven't been there in two years but it's always been wonderful.

I find the food messy. No precision. Practically heaped on the plate at random. No connection among the elements. And yet oddly prissy too.

i ate at cyrus late last year and had the same impression. good to very good food but the caviar and champagne cart thing was silly and offputting.

When I went it felt very much like a restaurant that was going through a change of chefs. Everything out of the kitchen was...off. It was like the entropy that will eventually overtake everything was being presented in miniature. The food and the wine all came out at the exact same temperature. The soup and entrees were too cold, the wine was too warm, the dessert too warm, the glassware right out of the dishwasher. It was one of the first times in a long time that we sent anything back to the kitchen, and we sent three things back. Truly disappointing.

Cory,
May I ask when this ocurred?
Sounds rough.
Best, Jim
Two years ago? I was so disappointed I had no cause to return.

Oh yeah, I forgot - for Mexican food go to Juanita!, Juanita! out on Arnold Drive (maybe 5 mins. from the square. Its an institution. And you won't believe the building.
Best, Jim

Yes - that's what I was looking for! Thanks, Jim!

Juanita! Juanita! is fine, but you might spend $9 on a burrito there. Best bet is to hit up the wonderful array of taco trucks that line the streets of Agua Caliente at night (Highway 12). But if I'm stuck in the square, Rin's Thai is great.
