A Scheurebe of Some Age

I rarely post wine tasting notes on line, but one so rarely sees a note on an older Scheurebe, that I thought this note may be of some interest.

1998 Pfeffingen Ungsteiner Herrenberg Scheurebe Sptlese

Served with an asparagus souffl, this is a wine with rose and honey notes in the nose, and a mineral spine playing the enlivening acidity against the slightly apparent sugar and the roses and honey in the nose. All done with great subtlety and balance and superb minerality. Probably decades of life ahead for this wine because of its balance, but it has already achieved the state of a mature wine that is in complete harmony.

That's because most of them (the good ones at least) taste so amazing in their youth!

Thanks for the note. I've also really enjoyed the 98 Muller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spatlese and Auslese recently (though others with more experience with that wine say it was even better in its youth and has declined a little bit since).

I have a few bottles of the 01 Catoir Scheu Spatlese, though I don't imagine those will survive beyond the end of the year (as intrigued as I am to see how that may age). Too tempting to drink those now.

The '93 Wirsching scheurebe that Lyle brought in a year or two ago for Chambers had actually held up better than the riesling. But I can't say I've ever been tempted to start a scheurebe shelf in my cellar.

Yeah, those are killer wines. Haven't had one in about five years, though.
