TN: '98 Breton, Chinon Les Picasses

The wine at 12 years old is polite and modest. The oak that was so apparent in the beginning is now just a faint whiff of char that blows in along with the flavors of Chinon. Only 11.5 alcohol, which is refreshing. Maybe it was better a few years ago but I'll certainly enjoy the last few bottles.

We also drank a bottle of 2008 Wilfrid Rousse, Chinon Les Galuches which has the coolest label featuring a mermaid holding a fish along with some very good font choices. The wine is leafy and leesy and very easy to drink. Unpretentious.

Best,
Kay

A lot compared to Breton's other wines but not so much in the larger picture. It was certainly never an "oak bomb" or anything like that.

Thanks Kay

Mature Chinon is the bomb.
I'm still waiting for my stash of 89 Clos du Parc to loosen up. Did you buy any of the 96, I think it was?

didn't we have the 89 last year ? I thought it was the bomb indeed

No Clos du Parc here, guess I missed that one.

I found several of his 1998s to be very oaky in the early going. Callahan assured me this would not be the case, and indeed they have turned beautiful. Les Nuits d'Ivresse was vibrant, open, and delicious a couple of years ago. At the moment it seems off from its high point, but I'm not sure if it is in decline, or just changing register.
