Thanks to all for a great thread on recommended reading. I'll add + whatever for Our Man in Havana. I just re-read it over the Christmas holidays.

About to leave for a big trip, I would like to call on your collective expertise for film tips for travel, with the caveat that it has to be the sort of thing available from iTunes, so I can watch it without access to the internet. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold fit the bill on my last trip. Something with a tight plot, but not too heavy, maybe The Italian Job, or Ocean's Eleven, would be examples.
 
I just checked and Firefly is available from iTunes. Brilliant sf tv series from Joss Whedon which the Fox TV executives hated. What better recommendation can you ask for?

Grateful Dawg? Nicish documentary about the Jerry Garcia-David Grisman Collaboration, made (I think) by Grisman's son. Good if you like these musicians and their music.
 
Firefly is great. Starwars with a more wild-west sensibility. Basically if you like Han Solo, get in on this.

Six Feet Under and The Wire are possibly the best 10-11 seasons of television ever to exist. The Wire seems a little more up your alley, given what you were describing, Cliff. A-moralist Baltimore crime drama.

Also, stay away from J.J. Abrams. Spoofy, to say the least. I wanted to throw a bottle of Caymus Special Select through my TV after I finished Lost last week. Similar feelings on Alias.
 
+ 1 on The Wire. I burned through the first season after reading VLMs appreciation.

Also, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. It's a British mini-series featuring Alec Guiness as Smiley, based on one of Le Carre's subsequent books; don't know if it's on i-Tunes.
 
The season of summer does not begin until I watch Jaws, the original of course.

Second (third) the rec on The Wire. I am just finishing the last episodes of the last season. The Wire is available on DVD that can be re-encoded into a smaller format or from "other" sources already compressed.

Other movies I have been thinking about along the Fire Island or Summer theme are The Wackness and Digby Goes Down - not deep but quite enjoyable entertainment. And if you have not seen it, Tetro is worth your time.
 
The Wire is absolutely up my street, but I've seen 'em all. Too bad Treme isn't out on iTunes.

The Third Man. How have I missed that?? On the hard-drive. I'll also have to add a couple episodes from Firefly. For whatever reason, I never got into Six Feet Under.
 
I groove on some of the BBC crime procedurals like Prime Suspect (Helen Mirren FTW) and Wire in the Blood. Waking the Dead is supposed to be good, too.

I also _really_ like MI-5 (known as Spooks in the UK). That was very good TV.

Yes - me, too. Those are all terrific. Just watched the latest Foyle's War. On a different wavelength: House of Cards and To Play the King.

Igby. I've seen it a couple of times, and would recommend it. It has some nice performances.

I was walking around thinking about that - Next time need to google, then post. Need some kind of right-click fact checker app.
 
I found The Dollhouse to be the only good thing Josh Whedon has ever done (except the first couple episodes). If we're talking movies with summer in the title, Wet Hot American Summer is an underrated gem. Or you could just watch Kiewlowski's Decalogue like me.
 
Kieslowski's best is "Trois Couleurs: Rouge." I can't get into the rest.

For American indies, Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale" is awesome.

Made me rewatch "Kicking and Screaming," a classic.
 
I've always like Bleu on a more visceral level than Rouge, but all three are brilliant films. I'm surprised you don't like The Double Life of Veronique.

Stalker - Perfect winter dread.

and best Krzysztof Kieślowski by far is The Decalogue. I like R, W, B...but Decalogue is his masterpiece.
