How come nobody's said a word about the World Cup?

spain certainly doesn't look like a contender.
Thanks for the quote, Robert. I will gladly go back to it on July 7.

Soccer is not baseball, or football, or basketball...

Regardless of how one feels about Spain's play today, the officiating was, yet again, atrocious. How long can FIFA resist the calls for some sort of additional official or review process when calls in such important games are this godawful?

Ignorance, disdain?

Either way, Robert and VS, Spain-Germany should be a smashing match. Too bad that I have to be at work while it takes place.
Should be, but after watching Germany dismantle Argentina and Spain struggle against Paraguay, I'm not so sure.

There is one US sport that bears some resemblance to soccer, after all... This may help you newbies understand what's going on: the Lakers were scoring 124 points with champagne basketball in destroying the Suns, and then they were constricted to scoring 83 points in the trenches to finally, painfully put away the Celtics. Think about that before watching the semis.

I'm impressed with your knowledge of soccer.

And basketball.
Any attempt at humor by Rahsaan is welcomed. I've always been critical because he is always so serious. I remember that you attended Columbia and were a big Knick fan. You've got a big edge on Rahsaan in the basketball knowledge area.
I work hard watching some of the world cup games but I just can't get into the game like I wish I could. Most other sports I've personally played, that's probably the difference. I'm just not knowledgeable.

i woulda thought that was hockey, or lacrosse. . .

Big Celtics fan since 1963, Lou. In New York. Takes some guts.

But that was so long ago. I have now switched allegiances to teams where kids from the forlorn southwestern corner of Europe play.

And there are more tactical similarities between soccer and basketball than between soccer and ice hockey. I know nothing about lacrosse, except that fellows from fancy schools also run afoul of the law there.

Spain has to be considered a slight favourite against Germany, IMO.

It's a shame to go on to the semis without Suarez and Mueller. Mueller's yellow card was ridiculous, but what's new. He is not yet a great player, but he is very much a part of the system, and they will require a plan B without him.

Remind me to make an outrageous generalization about Spanish wine some time this week.

Nate Silver, who does some pretty nifty statistical analyses of sports and politics at fivethirtyeight.com (moving to NY Times) has the odds on NL over URU at 58.3/41.7 and Spain over DLand at 50.8/49.2. Odds of taking the whole enchilada: Spain 28.58, NL 27.64, DLand 27.34, URU 16.44.
