Bordeaux - 2nd wines

Bordeaux - 2nd winesWhich ones are consistently good? I don't taste often or widely enough.

Beyond Les Forts de Latour, you mean? I usually steer clear of most, finding them often so different in character from the Grand Vin as to be unrecognizable. Clos du Marquis, in a bygone era, used to be interesting.

I actually have enjoyed Clos du Marquis in recent, less hyped (and thus also less expensive)vintages such as 1998, 2001 and 2002.

The 2nds of the 1sts are too expensive to be worth it.

How about 2nd wines of less heralded houses, e.g. Amiral de Beychevelle, La Gravette de Certan, Sarget de Gruaud Larose etc.?

I get enough tastes of 2nds of 1sts to know that I'm unlikely to spend on them anytime soon.

I've often found Fiefs de Lagrange nearly indistinguishable from the big house.

Clos de Marquis isn't really a second, is it? Doesn't it come from grapes grown a discrete vineyard, separate from those of the main Chateau?

Yes, but that doesn't change the general perception, so I am happy to take advantage.

Chteau Margaux 2000 "Pavillon Rouge du Chteau Margaux" (Margaux) Lush, sultry, slutty, whorehouse Bordeaux. I dont mean that as a bad thing, necessarily, but the lurid aromatics and the very particular texturewell, I can see why certain critics tend towards describing wines such as this in pornographic terms, because the lingo fits. Theres plenty of structure, but its oh-so-plushy and New World, and the dark fruit is expansive and soft. That said, theres tobacco and pepper dust (more on the fruit than the spice side of pepper), and it is recognizable as Bordeaux. But modern Bordeaux, for sure. I find it impossible to not like, despite any stylistic reservations. Surprisingly drinkable now, but theres far from any hurry to get to it; I suspect theres a lot more development to come. (5/10)
