I shipped a case of wine, a couple of weeks before this trip, to some friends we'd be staying with in Salo, on the coast of Lago di Garda. It was finally delivered this afternoon. It was held up in customs for over two weeks, because, as our friends were told, they had no way of knowing what is in the bottles. They said they would have to open the package, and "maybe do some testing!" We're leaving tomorrow for Spoleto, so I'm glad it didn't take another day to arrive. Had dinner in a really good Osteria last night, Mafalde, in Manerba di Garda. Drank an '05 Valpolicella from a producer, Vicentini Agostino, that was marvelous, still a bit youthful and tight, but showing classic mineral, red fruit, spice, and pleasing bitter note leaving the fruit with a nice edge. Not cheap, but really first rate. I AM a lucky bastard!
