drinking lots of weissburgunder here. keyboards are very weird. ten inches of snow in dolomites friday evening (we were in gorizia at the time. at 101, a great local restaurant. 06 buzzinelli ribolla gialla is really nice wine, if you can find it.) lots of grapes still hanging in Bolzano. tomorrow lago di garda. hiatus is nice, and might suffice. end of message. carry on.

Enjoy Friuli (stop).
Drink great wines that have unusual names (stop).
Thinking of making ribolla gialla (stop).
Best, Jim

Steve, did they suggest any local, traditional food matches for the Ribolla?

Jim, I'd be interested in trying a California Ribolla. I'm just not sure the Italian whites do that well in CA (or reds for that matter, has any one had a decent CA Nebbiolo?). In my limited sampling only the Tablas Creek Vermentino showed well and they'd prefer to call it Rolle.

I recently had one that smelled right but tasted wrong:

Hanna Winery 1998 Nebbiolo "Bismark Ranch" - $35, nose is definitely nebbiolo but the mouth is definitely not barolo; aroma of flowers and cranberry; the taste of tar is there but the firm acidity which is austere in barolo is too sour here; flavor of strawberries and a bit of bubble-gum; finishes clean; good but not good enough to buy again

Palmina, but I suspect your point is that I'd have been hard-pressed to identify it as nebbiolo were it not labeled so.

Hiatus-boy makes a fine vermentino-grenache blanc blend, and I've had a few other vermentinos that I've liked: Tayerle, and to a lesser extent Uvaggio. I concur, re: the Tablas Creek.

On the way through trentino say hello to my family.

Lago di garda is the french riviera, stop in Limone at Gatto Borracho for dinner and drinks.

I shipped a case of wine, a couple of weeks before this trip, to some friends we'd be staying with in Salo, on the coast of Lago di Garda. It was finally delivered this afternoon. It was held up in customs for over two weeks, because, as our friends were told, they had no way of knowing what is in the bottles. They said they would have to open the package, and "maybe do some testing!" We're leaving tomorrow for Spoleto, so I'm glad it didn't take another day to arrive. Had dinner in a really good Osteria last night, Mafalde, in Manerba di Garda. Drank an '05 Valpolicella from a producer, Vicentini Agostino, that was marvelous, still a bit youthful and tight, but showing classic mineral, red fruit, spice, and pleasing bitter note leaving the fruit with a nice edge. Not cheap, but really first rate. I AM a lucky bastard!

Spoleto is where I stayed for three weeks several years ago.
Best meal I ever ate was at a restorante on the piaza.
Truffles on everything and Lungarotti from the dark ages.
Best, Jim

And here we are, in the dark ages once more. Lungarotti I recall from about '75. Maybe in Spoleto our vacation finally begins.

Time of my life, amigo.
Sit back, breath, forget breakfast, get up late, eat late.
Walk among the living - look up.
