2008 Jadot Beaune 'Clos des Ursules'

Jay Miller

Jay Miller
Very Jadot and very 2008.

Needed about 3 hours to really come around. It was all *tart* red fruit at first, with a hint of spice and earth on the finish. Interesting but not all that pleasant to drink. Quite silky now, the earthier elements are a touch more prominent and the tartness has receded and the wine has smoothed out. Still shows as very young but it's a delightful drink nonetheless. Very nice and in the grand scheme of Burgundy a good value.

Jay,

Thanks for the notes. Jadot's 2008s are (were) really cheap. I think I paid about $35 on pre-arrival for this wine. Can to see it tastes good.

It's $40 in stock at Wine Library now - been awhile since Ursules was that cheap.

Yes. Used to be a 'go to' for many savvy burg-buyers, iirc, before the 05 price lift.

That's where I got mine. Decent prices on '08 Jadot there all around really.

The prices I paid for a bunch of Jadot 2008s were really quite good.

Bonnes Mares $120
Clos Vougeot $68
Corton Puegets $51
GC Clos St. Jacques $67
Beaune Clos de Ursules $33

Got them on a pre-arrival sale last May, received them a couple of weeks ago. Required case or in some cases half case purchases (split them with two friends).

I think these prices are a little better than one can find them for now, but my guess is not that much. Watch out though - the 2009s are vastly more expensive.

I'd guess that they're taking the (sensible) attitude that if they want people to buy the '08s and not just wait for the '09s they should be priced well. I'm happy

What 08s are you buying, Jay?

Not much as I have no space. So far it's 5 mixed Jadots from Wine Library (of which I opened one Ursules). 2 Drouhin Amoureuses because I always liked them and .sasha waxed enthusiastic. And two de Montille VR Malconsort 'Christiane' because Keith nearly had apoplexy when raving about the terroir. Oh, and I've been buying some of the Bart Marsannay 'Echezot' for current drinking. Excellent value at $20. So it's only 8 bottles so far to put away for aging. But given that I put away no 2007 and only 3 bottles of 2006 I suppose it qualifies as a large increase for me. There's just no place to put them.

I obviously need to drink more.

I'm just gonna love 08s. And if I don't, I am going to lie about it. At least to VLM. From barrel, about the same density of fruit as '98, perhaps a touch less dirt, but definitely finer, on average. Of course the amoureuses which Jay was so wise to buy fits none of these descriptions, but that's because there were about two grapes per vine left hanging there.

$33 is awfully good. Well done.

Ian,

I got it here at Arrowine last May. If they have anymore, I am sure it would be a bit higher (these were prearrival prices). But it shouldn't be too expensive. I doubt demand for 2008s is all that great at the moment.

Thanks. I liked Arrowine a lot when I lived in town, but their prices - constrained by the Va 3-tier set-up, rarely seemed like bargains. Maybe it's true that the 08s are being priced to move off the shelves quickly.
