Coasting

Low humidity, light breezes, 80 degrees in Sonoma and 60s on the coast; fall in northern CA. Or maybe, Indian Summer?
We were getting a little stale; running to the winery, trying to keep up with the day-to-day and not finding enough time for each other. So off we went to Point Reyes.
The seashore was inspiring with surf, sand, and the salt scent. The town was quaint and inviting. And the drive out was so pretty.
We stopped by Cowgirl Creamery and found out they sell many cheeses other than their own. Got some Roccolo, Baserri, Sally Jackson goat in grape leaves and Gabietou.
And then to Osteria Stellina for lunch; their take on panzanella, and, an oyster, leeks and lemon-sage pizza. The panzanella was good with croutons gilled over almond wood and the pizza may be my new favorite food - yummy!
Got their last bottle of 2009 Arnot-Roberts, Ribolla Gialla Vare Vnyd. which is wonderful. Pure, clean, crisp, varietally correct, no cloy or oiliness and lots of flavor. 12.5% alcohol, 2 1/2 barrels produced. Lovely.

About as good as a day gets.

Best, Jim

I don't know about the Youngbloods, but I was standing in line waiting for a sandwich in Pt Reyes at the caf by the Cowgirl Creamery store last year when I ran into Tim Wiedenkeller, a phenomenal banjo/guitar player from Southern California who I'd last seen in Tucson where I sat in with him when he played a friend's wedding right about the time he changed his name to the more pronouncable "Tim Weed".

-Eden (Jim, Tim's worth seeing if he's playing anywhere in the area, even if he wasn't in the Youngbloods)

Jim,
Are you talking about Pt. Reyes Nat'l Seashore as well as the town of Pt. Reyes Station? The latter is indeed a quaint NoCal seaside town, but the former is one of Jean's favorite places on Earth (it's pretty high on my list, too). If you did go to Pt. Reyes proper, which beach did you visit?

Both.
North beach.

That's right, Olema, where I hear they still take people in if they're haggard...

Olema? I thought that was only in Muskogee...

-Eden (in the Vanguard of all I hold dear)(but his Capitol stuff is still my favorite)

Cool! McClure's Beach further north is even rougher and more exposed, for that quintessential NoCal seaside experience (30 mph winds, cold water and rough surf). Limantour beach is far more sheltered but nice for beachside picnicking (there are grills there, too) but our favorite beach is probably Sculptured Beach which is only accessible via a 2-3 mi hike.

(beer and vittles at Olema Inn afterward doesn't suck, either)

Sculptured Beach is wonderful and the long-way hike in from Bear Valley ain't too shabby, either -- few people on the trail mid-week, and you'll find yourself exclaiming, out loud, "fuck!" every few minutes. It's difficult to comprehend that you're only an hour away from SF. Not far from Eden Mylunsch State Beach in Malibu you'll have the same experience hiking the Mishe Mokwa trail.

I saw Mishe open for Belle Barth in the Catskills during my formative years. I've NEVER since seen anyone who could keep as many saucers spinning on sticks at the same time as he did. His skills were so refined that he could make even Dervishes dizzy, such was his talent. It was too bad about that accident he had while working out the kinks of his "spinning circular-saw blades on sticks" routine.

-Eden (he was a real cut up, that Mishe!)

My parents had a copy of If I Embarrass You Tell Your Friends. I presume that I am of the wrong generation to have really appreciated it; I thought there was exactly one good joke on it.

Belle's jokes probably weren't ringing for you at such a tender age probably because you were anxious for your parent to turn off the record player and pull out the Mad Libs books.

-Eden (no, not that Madlib)
