No love for Hochrain?
Hochrain is good, esp. in hot vintages where Singerriedel can get OTT.

Been enjoying the '99 Hochrain of late.

And, FWIW, Stephen B at Crush agrees with Joe and Nathan (and i don't think Stephen would make this up):

"... fans of Prager will recognize that he's been making a Riesling "Wachstum Bodenstein" since 1997, though this wine is actually sourced from a special high-altitude parcel in the Hinterseiber. More on this wine below.

***

One of the first wines to really showcase the free-thinking, experimental and provocative side of Toni Bodenstein. Planted in 1990 in a high-altitude section of the Hinterseiber vineyard (literally bordering the forest at the top of the mountain), this was planted at an altitude of about 1,500 feet (between 440-460 meters). Many people doubted that the vineyard would be able to fully ripen Riesling. Over 10 years later, not only does the vineyard produce incredibly elegant and mineral wines, but while others have problems with over-ripening, the Bodenstein wines, even in hot vintages like 2003 and 2006, are balanced and elegant.

Anytime you you see the "Wachstum Bodenstein" moniker, you should know that one of the points of the wine is to showcase genetic diversity. Bodenstein planted the vineyard with 15 different types of Riesling sourced from the Wachau as well as Germany's Rheingau, Mosel and Pfalz and France's Alsace."

Stephen B.! Now there's an authoritative source worth citing.

Don't think I've ever seen, much less tasted, a '97 WB, have you, Kirk?

Marcarini, Barolo, 'la Serra', 1999
Tense, nervous strawberry-unsweetened raspberry puree with an iron-rust finish. Taut. Perhaps young by a few years? B+/A- 14%

The last couple times I tried this I thought it would be eons before the wine ever came around; I'll have to try another one soon.

I have not. I am a piker. '01 was my first WB. (But, god, is that wine beautiful.)

Kajanero 2005, the first time around (there were at least two different bottlings so far as I could discern) was KILLER. Totally great. Depth of character on a lithe and perfumed frame, for basically a pittance.

The second bottling was more like what you describe. Simpler. Fruitier. Darker. Somewhat heavier and more four square. Still a decent drop.

'99 WB was pretty grand yesterday in the cellar, and the comparison to '99 FXP DK supported .sasha, though you wouldn't toss the DK out of bed. The rs is more perceptable in both than I recalled, though I wonder if that's just how I was tasting yesterday.

But even with those very young vines, the WB had a comnpletely beautiful nose and great acidity and length.

I love it when you talk dirty.
