Reading Theise for the first time I almost had a heart attack. It was incredibly intense. I finished the catalog in one sitting. It was crazy.

This was before I posted on or read any boards. It was back when I was trying to sell Gravner in Florida (don't try to do that, btw). It was like someone had put out on paper my, well, my everything in regards to wine.

I still tear up sometimes.
 
Which winemakers are eloquent interpreters of other people's wines?

How many even try to interpret their own wines?

How many of those above actually make good wine?

There is Eric (for his own wines and those of his region), there is Bruce G., and there is...wait, hold on, it will come to me...

I mean, seriously.
 
There are proprietors who have greatly impressed me; not sure you would say they were winemakers, though.

I started a second thread because internet bulletin boards is such a different subject from yeasts. But then I opened "I wish he had spent more time on the grower nitty gritty" within the second to avoid creating a third. I met you half way.

Well put Levi! I could not agree more... IMHO, Terry is just saying "enjoy the wine and the sourroundings" and do not become like those that keeps wandering around a new city with the face in their IPhones/Berry rather than looking at the city...

But keep in mind that wine board geeks are not ready for some criticism being entangled with their keyboard...

Is that really so, Filippo? I think people here have been measured in their responses and mostly respectful of Theise's writing and accomplishments, generally recognizing the irony in the latter part of the paragraph, and disagreeing only with the extremity and broad sweep of its substance.

As a general rule, I think criticisms always say more about the person judging than the object being judged. And reactions to criticism also say more about the person reacting than the issue in question.

I posted the quote for informational reasons AND, intimately, because the word lonely irritated me. But the latter only means that I have to look into myself and understand my unresolved issues better. I have no desire to lash out at Theise because he puts his own unresolved issues in print, something we all do here all the time. There is definitely a kind of loneliness that generates participation in a message board (protestants who are uncomfortable discussing their feelings should stop reading now!). Many of us are happily married or have significant others and could hardly be called lonely in the general sense of the term. But there is obviously some yearning for membership in a wider community that is not fully attended to by home and professional life, and that we seek to complement here. Perhaps it is only when the participation borders on the obsessive (mea culpa) that internal red flags should be raised.

I see what your are saying and certainly Wine Disorder is a pretty unique and fantastic community to which I dare to partecipate only very rarely and topics on which I could try to add some value.

However if before I felt compelled to post (on other BBs), now I do not anymore as I'd like to keep inside most of my (wine) experience (thus pretty useless to post on this board).

I think Terry is referring not to obsessive/compulsive posters, nor to lonely people (to me you do not sound any of the above and plese do keep on posting) but to those who value their contribution on BBs above the experience a wine can give you.

Let me know when you are in London. Will share a glass of Riesling.

Dude, totally. I've tried reading his catalogs several times and can never get past the first few pages. I trust Maureen and have no doubt he's engaging and delightful company in person.

If you are allergic to schmaltz I can see how some of Terry's work could be prohibitively annoying to read. But once you realize the schmaltz is part of his terroir, you can get past it.

Yes, reading Kevin Harvey talk about vineyard sites, soil, etc. is fascinating. He's not the winemaker though.

Seems quite simple to me. People who post on wine boards enjoy talking about wine. This is one very easy/convenient way to do it. Any pleasure can be taken to excess of course.
