Oh, dear...yeah, especially since I made a point of telling Terry and Odessa that they have to drink with you and Theres now that T & O are up sort of your way.
...But don't mind me. I'm just a private, introverted guy, and my relationship with wine has always been intimate.

I would actually much rather hear winemakers themselves weigh in on that sort of thing than anyone else.
Thank You Cory! That needed to be said...I'm filing most of this discussion and the other thread under 'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing'
I particularly liked Eric's comments..
"there are tons of splendid terroir wines (burgundy and mosel come to mind) that are inoculated and tons of terrible carbonic fruit salad that express terroir as beautifully as Yellow Tail and that are native fermented...."
WAAY too much Internet postering and self-promotion going on.
Let the vignerons make the wine....

I've never met Theise, but haven't liked any writing by him that I've encountered, on boards or in catalogs. I don't like this bit either.

At least merge. Although it is interesting that the originator of the thread started the yawning.

Dude, are you serious?
Really?
n00b?
Reading Theise for the first time I almost had a heart attack. It was incredibly intense. I finished the catalog in one sitting. It was crazy.
This was before I posted on or read any boards. It was back when I was trying to sell Gravner in Florida (don't try to do that, btw). It was like someone had put out on paper my, well, my everything in regards to wine.
I still tear up sometimes.

But keep in mind that wine board geeks are not ready for some criticism being entangled with their keyboard...

There are proprietors who have greatly impressed me; not sure you would say they were winemakers, though.

Is that really so, Filippo? I think people here have been measured in their responses and mostly respectful of Theise's writing and accomplishments, generally recognizing the irony in the latter part of the paragraph, and disagreeing only with the extremity and broad sweep of its substance.
As a general rule, I think criticisms always say more about the person judging than the object being judged. And reactions to criticism also say more about the person reacting than the issue in question.
I posted the quote for informational reasons AND, intimately, because the word lonely irritated me. But the latter only means that I have to look into myself and understand my unresolved issues better. I have no desire to lash out at Theise because he puts his own unresolved issues in print, something we all do here all the time. There is definitely a kind of loneliness that generates participation in a message board (protestants who are uncomfortable discussing their feelings should stop reading now!). Many of us are happily married or have significant others and could hardly be called lonely in the general sense of the term. But there is obviously some yearning for membership in a wider community that is not fully attended to by home and professional life, and that we seek to complement here. Perhaps it is only when the participation borders on the obsessive (mea culpa) that internal red flags should be raised.
