Not a huge big deal but...

Adventures Along the Wine Route probably got me into wine more than anything. I re read it probably 3 or 4 times early on, gleaning what I could about the ins and outs of French wine. His book of excerpts from his mailers just happens to be the current bathroom reading, and I mean this in a good way. I have always considered Kermit Lynch to be a cool guy and have harbored fantasies of running into him in some French cellar somewhere.

My personal denouement wine was a 1996 Lapierre.

I buy A LOT of Kermit's wines. My last KL purchase was $1400, and honestly that's not that unusual. Case and a half of MMIX, a Lapierre 3L, etc..

The KL shop in Berkeley is part of our ritual pilgramage every time we visit our family in Eastbay. We love to go there.

I have personally suffered enormously during the last couple of years. The project I have worked on for five years was put on hold due to financing (thankfully, that's resolved). Our groundbreaking ceremony, held the day the Dow dropped 777 points, was held before we'd signed on the dotted line for financing. Thus a year and a half exodus. My work has to do with dealing with climate change, so believe me I worry a lot about the end of the world as we know it, etc.. I'm feeling just grand right now about the political/cultural situation related to it.

Like about half of us here, wine is my hobby. It is probably my biggest hobby. I'm passionate about it, in a diversionary sort of way. We're all passionate about it here. The aesthetics of a label is something we care about. Sure, it is sort of stupid to care - but given the aesthetic heart of wine, surely you understand our passion. Ultimately isn't that what art is about?

ALL THAT SAID, I reread my earlier posts and didn't really appreciate my own presumption of Kermit's motives. I apologize, that was not acceptable. To some degree, it stems from my assumption that only 39 people read this site, but I think that's starting to change, and regardless I think I crossed a line. Altho I was mostly tongue in cheek - I really wasn't serious about a boycott.

THAT BEING SAID, I still can't stand the label change and think you should find a front label that works. Heck, have us vote on it. How many people have a geeky fan club like you? We're your people!

PS, the 81 Lucien Barrot CNP we had last week was absolutely delicious - thank you!

I'll stick with what I said even if it's to Kermit's virtual face. I think it's good, smart branding and is going to be successful for KLWM. What I don't like is the name of the importer coequal with, or even (in the case of the Foillard label) more prominent than, the name of the producer. So whoever's to blame for that...KLWM, Foillard, some anonymous design firm...I still don't like it. Not that whether or not I like it matters.

Still, if I could make a suggestion, it would be that if you're going to allow single-label integration of the importer ID, not emphasizing it over the (at least to me) more important identity on the label would be preferable. But maybe Foillard doesn't see it that way, and that's why the label looks like it does.

I used to be skeptical, but now I know quantum physics is right; (some) particles do behave differently when they are being observed.

Don't get me wrong, I feel just as strongly, I just shouldn't have questioned motives quite so aggressively.

It's a foundational precept of the internet, though it wasn't unmanageable until the advent of Eternal September.

Dang! Party at Brad's! I didn't even get a bottle it was so tightly allocated and I sell the stuff.

Better yet, since we've jeebused in Seattle, I think it's about time you made it to NY for a jeebus.

I think I had a more nuanced post than that.

Thanks Brad, actually hope to be there soon, and looking forward to the jeeb that goes with the visit...

BJ, if KL really doesn't want heartfelt feedback from his most loyal retail customers, even about minor matters, that's up to him. I wouldn't take it too much to heart.

Sorry for the ellipses above, it might make it appear that I have set you up stylistically to appear to be someone else.

Hey, not having to turn the bottle around will cure my carpal tunnel syndrome. Though I'll miss the Jefferson quote.

Wow you go on a brief hiatus and this is what happens? See you in 2011. Or maybe 2012.

And for all the kanenites, there are times when I wouldn't mind a wine list or shop organized by importer rather than producer. And who the fuck are you really serving if not us non-ITB schmucks?

Happy whatever.

Brad, this is way too much suffering. Let me help.

The latest Lynch mailer came yesterday and his name is on the front label of everything now, including Chevillon. Interesting. I speculate that this development is related to his work in the past year to establish a presence for his retail operation in the internet market, where back labels don't even exist.

Unrelated, his flyer calls Savary Chablis the most 'Raveneau-like' he sells, which is an interesting characterization for a fairly below-the-radar producer.

i can confirm that savary's vv bottling does indeed use the same shade of yellow wax that raveneau uses in lieu of a capsule. otherwise the savary wines tend to be more chablis and less chardonnay than those of raveneau. fwiw.

I'm in the fatcamp on this one. Those Savary Chablis that I've had have uniformly failed to remind me of the (1 or 2) Raveneau wines that I've had. Nice enough stuff, though (I'm not the biggest Raveneau fan based on my limited exposure).

Not a huge big deal but...Just got my 09 Foillard and "Imported by Kermit Lynch" is prominently displayed at the top of the front label.

I have seen the importer displayed on the front label of many wines, but its usually in small print at the bottom of the label. pretty unobtrusive.

This seems tacky and unnecessary to me. Thoughts?

Maybe someone was listening because the 2010 vintage doesn't have the extra KLWM strip above the front label: the importer is listed in small print neatly at the bottom of the label. (Of course this change came at the cost of an increase in price!)

Brad, I am all for that. I believe we should have a dozen importers bringing the wine into this country, with each slapping their logo on the front. We'll vote for the most aesthetically pleasing, or for the least offensive.
