CWD: And now for something completely different...

With an anticipated snowfall exceeding 18" approaching our fair metropolis, we decided to hunker down with a dinner of seared, dry-packed scallops. Jean called for a crisp white wine to wash it down, so down to the cellar I hied only to return, Bocksbeutel in hand, with a bottle of 2007 Hans Wirsching Scheurebe Iphöfer Kalb Kabinett which was its usual herbal, floral self in an off-dry, firmly acidic package. Sort of like a hypothetical cross of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, this wine certainly hits the spot. Jean quips that the Bocksbeutel won't fit easily in the wine preservation system that she gave me for Xmas, so no leftovers!

Now to bed to await the onslaught.

It means they are not soaked in phosphates, which can be used to increase their weight and which are believed to adversely affect taste.

What does that phrase mean?

What Jim said. Surprisingly, despite the fact that we live ridiculously far from the nearest ocean, we can get high quality seafood here courtesy of an Alaskan ex-pat who flies in fresh and flash frozen seafood directly. He establishes personal relationships with the fisherman who supply him and engaged me in a 5 minute exposition of fishing practices when I questioned whether his "Chilean sea bass" was sustainably fished. We're really lucky that this guy has settled in our little podunk community.

(eyeing 11-18" of snowfall in the next 24 h and planning a BBQ party)

In the same storm, but given the wind pattern the drift in my driveway tomorrow with be 3 to 4 feet deep. I'll need some steroid-pumped up Shiraz to get through the day.

If anybody else gets what we're getting in Iowa City right now, good luck. It's been a long time since I've felt that a media-weather-freakout was justified, but this one's real folks. We may not end up with gigantic snow totals, but I don't think I've ever seen this combo of crazy wind and heavy snowfall.

I'm certainly happy to be safely hunkered for the evening.

Cheers,

Kevin

Unfortunately, I'm hunkered down with wine that I pulled from LTS because I'm ready to either drink it or dump it down the drain.

'98 Soumade Confiance -- Muddy, undrinkable mess
'99 Mas Jullien -- Astringent, unpleasurable, past its prime
'02 Fevre Vaudesir -- Not premoxed, but insipid

I'm going to have to put on my boots and venture out into the snow for a bottle of Beaujolais sooner than I thought...

I'm sitting here having a wee-bit of Cappellano Chinato hoping the wind doesn't blow our building over in Chicago. It is kinda insane. Thundersnow!

Thank you. Is the purported value of phosphates that they are a preservative, or is this purely a mercenary maneuver?

No, they definitely preserve.
