Wild mushrooms in Brussels

I swear there is a bus leaving at around 0600am from Trafalgar Square every Saturday. It's packed solid with foodies heading towards Brussels.

Some actually never come back.

Perhaps the ones that don't come back got their Aminatae confused.

Madrid's the kind of town where you have a dingy, three-table neighborhood bar like El Cisne Azul with every inch of available space occupied by large baskets full of wild mushrooms - including, in season, Amanita Caesarea, of course, as one of the pics shows.

Happy to stage a Brussels jeebus. I have never been to the Café des Spores. It plays on the natural understatement of the Belgians, which have been ruled by others for most of its history and prides themselves for not making a fuzz about the good things.

Yes Brussels (and generally Belgium) is mad about its food, yes you can eat some of the best food in the world (Seagrill remains a stunner of a fish restaurant), or have a humble Moules-Frites in a great 1-Star restaurant with proper old-fashioned and impeccable service for E24. Yes, there is a scene with loads of trendy restaurants, bars, etc.

But, as Victor already alluded to, you can have as much fun, of course with different food, in Paris, Madrid, London, Düsseldorf (Japanese!), Venice, Amsterdam, ...

Too many great places, too little stomach space to enjoy them all ... THE great tragedies of our post-modern enjoyment society.

Yeah. Brussels didn't impress me much during my college Eurorail trip, though I did manage to have mussels there, mostly so I could say I had mussels in Brussels. I quickly headed off to Brugge.

Actually, on that topic and more seriously, Jean-Claude Van Damme was the subject of much amusement and is something of an internet meme (avant la lettre?) for his very "deep" pronouncements during interviews when he was at the height of his fame. He would do them in French (w Belgian accent, as is normal), but then say that he always wanted to be "aware." It's hard to give an idea of how silly and funny that sounds, but you read: "Oui, oui, je suis toujours aware" and it's kind of hilarious. He's very Zen.

That said, I don't know why, but I watched all of those Kickboxer, Blood Sport (I cite from memory), and other things back in the day with my little brother. We laughed at the dialogue, but they were kind of awesome all the same.

You sort of had to sit through the semblances of dialogue and plot to get to the fight scenes, but those were awesome. His technique was amazing. The staging (e.g., the finale of Death Warrant) too. But after the early 1990s, everything went downhill.
