This geographical fragmentation of the American family must be partly attributable to the local practice of sending kids to college in other cities. That seems healthy as a rite of passage, but must loosen bonds and help lead to employment elsewhere. Here, maybe in much of Europe too, it's more common for kids to live at home through college, and then often until they marry, usually someone local, ensuring the handy proximity of the granny.
