This geographical fragmentation of the American family must be partly attributable to the local practice of sending kids to college in other cities. That seems healthy as a rite of passage, but must loosen bonds and help lead to employment elsewhere. Here, maybe in much of Europe too, it's more common for kids to live at home through college, and then often until they marry, usually someone local, ensuring the handy proximity of the granny.

I don't know about Brazil, but that certainly doesn't sound like the ambitious Europeans I know. I think things have changed a lot for the under-40 set. And even more so for the under-30 set.

In the Detroit Metro area there was a mohel pulled over for drunk driving because he had performed 7 or 8 circumcisions already that night and had a glass of wine at each one. Hope he kept a steady hand.

And relatively easy and cheap modes of transportation. Taking a plane from NY to LA is wa-a-ay easier than Conestoga wagon.
