Oswaldo Costa

Oswaldo Costa
Haven't been drinking much lately because we're expecting (it's official since last week) a baby (boy, it appears) for October. Gasp & egad. To a one verging on surmaturité, the present has been redrawn, more so the future. So, be thankful for far fewer tasting notes in the coming months.

But last night we had dinner at the home of some lovely young friends who went overboard to prepare a sumptuous little feast. To my deprived buds, even négociant fare tasted good.

2008 Sansonina Lugano 13%
Attractive aromas of honeysuckle and white flowers, with a pleasing metallic edge. Good balance and weight. Quite satisfying. Since mostly nobody hankers after Lugano, there's some chance of a decent one reaching Brazil.

2006 La Pousse d’Or Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravières Blanc 12.5%
Fine raw material, plays beautifully to the crowd, but too much oak for the curmudgeonly.

2002 Chateau Pontet Canet Médoc 13.0%
Plums, rosemary and forest floor. Fine, natural tasting acidity, lively fruit, appealing tannins, no oak obtrusion. A Bordeaux in the right left vintage for those tired of ripe and oaky Bordeaux (anyone?).

2008 Calvet Réserve du Ciron Sauternes 13.0%
Rich yet light. Balanced. Unpretentious. The very lack of unctuosity and ponderousness made this a pleasure to sip at the end of the night. Quaffer Sauternes, who would have thought. Normally wouldn’t touch Calvet with a ten foot Polack, but this showed me the error of my righteousness.

Yes, a brave new world. Congratulations!

But even if you've lost your at-home drinking partner for a few months, surely you'll have your own occasions to open a bottle and write a tasting note or two.

Many congratulations to you and Marcia, Oswaldo (you young whippersnapper, you)! Let's hope that 2011 proves to be a phenomenal birth year for wine (record acidities in Valtellina, perhaps? The lowest ABV in Vouvray in a generation?)

Congratulation, Oswaldo. Will be fun speculating on what you'll be laying down from this year's production.

Ian, you need ask?

Large format Bordeaux, of course! (emoticonfused)

Of course; and 2011's the vintage of the century!
