I can't find the original ad where the guy cuts a diamond in the back of the Lincoln as they drive around Manhattan.

Blimey, a pipe is, like, four dozen cases? And of port, no less.
A little over that. The idea was that the wine was ready when the boy was ready and he would drink it all his life.

According to some quick interwbez searching, a pipe was approx 115 Imperial Gallons; so roughly 522.8 liters, or 58 cases of 12 750ml bottles. I'd call that a good start for a boy, anyway.

The problem is going to be getting through college with some intact.

Eh, they will probably be beer drinkers.
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
When my 22 year comes over he goes right for my bottles of Texier.

Hearty congrats, Marcia and Oswaldo!

Wow! Belated congrats!

I just paid for the last 2 months of my younger son's preschool. He's off to kindergarten in the fall. Which would amount to the equivalent of roughly a $500/month raise, including perhaps a tangible increase in the wine budget. Depending on how long the old 1991 volvowagon continues to putter around town. The longer I can last without 2 car payments, the more wine I can potentially sock away...

I hear ya, Kevin. When our son entered (public, all-day) kindergarten last year, our daycare expenses declined by several thousand dollars... but didn't evaporate owing to afterschool care and summer. Now, however, our pre-tax childcare flexible spending accounts actually cover our expenses! I can't say that our savings have translated into any more wine purchases, though.

In BRICs, we use grannies for daycare.

We do, too, when we can. The 2000-3000* km commute is a bit wearisome, though.

* No, she doesn't move that far: it depends on which granny we seek out.

Agreed, even though we lucked out and ended up (relatively) near to both sets of grandparents, each set is still 150 miles away. Not close enough for a regular gig.

At least I'm already paying for afterschool babysitting, so the transition from preschool to elementary school isn't resulting in increased afterschool expenses.

Whohoo!

Sandi's oldest daughter is due in early Sept. with her first. Sandi figured that after Gina went back to work, she could take care of her during weekdays until our grandkid is ready to go to school. Helf-jokingly, she said that she'd get paid better than her current job and it would take her right up to retirement age.
