Mother's Day Meal

The Berkeley Farmer’s Market has changed dramatically over the last two or three weeks. Saturday I found strawberries, asparagus, sugar snap peas, snow peas, fava beans, green garlic and spring onions, and, arriving earlier than I have ever seen them, cherries! Stopped by Solano Cellars on a whim and picked up a bottle of Ameztoi Rubentis. Looks like risotto for Mother’s Day. Glad winter is over!

My local farmers markets don't open and start selling local strawberries until the first week of June. Only 3 weeks to go...

Coldest and near wettest spring on record in the PNW. Biggest snowpack in recorded history in the North Cascades. We're not out of the woods yet...

Surely the asparagus has been there for a while?

When I lived in Berkeley it would usually start in March, sometimes as early as February.

I think I saw a small amount of it for the first time about two weeks ago, but now it's everywhere.

It has, probably since the end of March. Strawberries have really come into their own only in the past couple of weeks due to the cool Spring. Saw the first local cherries yesterday, but passed on them. Not sweet enough. Never cared much for Brooks. Texture is too soft, IMO.

But rhubarb is in.

Mother's Day started with a bike ride to the USM is search of the bounty of spring - and after filling the car with $4.50 gal high test later in the day, this will be an oft repeated trip. The bike and it's associated small storage capacity leeds to some selective shopping. This trip yielded eggs, pea shoots, arugula, a Belle Rouge chicken and rhubarb. This was supplemented by Wednesday's ramps, fiddleheads and asparagus.

Mother's Day was: The chicken on the Weber rotisserie served over a variation of the Zuni Cafe Bread salad; Spring saute of asparagus, fiddleheads, ramps, prosciutto and breadcrumbs and; Desert, a strawberry (Fairway) and rhubarb galette.

Started with the Bonard NV "Tant-Mieux" and finished with a Domaine de la Chevalerie '96 "Bretêche"

Somebody bring me a bucket.

Happy Mother's Day everyone!
