Kane's Favourite Sherry

Domaine du Closel Savennières Clos du Papillon 1995. Sometimes being a bit short can be an advantage. It does have mineral. And steel. And it doesn't linger too long, unless you drink enough to saturate your palate.

Same experience here Jeff. Ugh.

I've been unlucky with the 96 Papillon (regular) lately as well. Poured 6 bottles down the drain last month. SFJoe's reports of good showings make me think my bottles just got fried somewhere along the line. Did I ever buy Closel from Cross****s to lay down (before I knew better)? Haunted a bit by this question.

On the flip side, 96 Papillon Speciale showed beautifully last month. Beautifully.

You have other 96s? Well yes, of course, as do I : Clos des Briords, Clos du Bourg, a Jasnières or two.

And here I expected to hear about a great Tintilla de Rota.

That's what I was thinking.

Those '95 Closel were Sherry on release, but no one believed me. I still have a couple of bottles laying around to contribute to a bring out your dead tasting.

Some more Closel data: last bottle of 1990 VV also heading towards Sherry but remarkably it was not corked.

There are undamaged bottles of the 1990 VV?

Actually, yes. My note on it from 5/09, but this bottle didn't come from the cooked batch that was available locally circa 2001.

"Whoa Nelly! This is showing like gangbusters! Fully open, flamboyant and lively with loads of quince, sweet yellow citrus, Bartlett pears, mineral, nuts and honey flavors and aromas. Mouth filling and persistent across the palate. There's some nice minerality here, though the wine is absolutely fruit driven. The wine really is as open and showy as Pamela Anderson in her peak years, but it shows better class and balance. Perhaps Sophia Loren? Really super stuff and I've never had a '90 that showed this well. Solid A. "

Bah. All of mine were from that cooked batch.

Although a wine that's like Pamela Anderson is probably not one I'd like much.

Find a still photo of her when she was on "Home Improvement". That was before she had all manner of plastic perjury done to herself. She was a very beautiful woman. I'd drink a wine like that anytime.

Well, it was probably cooked, if Brad is to be believed, but it was the only bottle out of four that wasn't blatantly corked. Small victories, Chris, that's the best we can do.

Comparing damaged wine to sherry is so uncouth and so unfair...
I should have known better than to make a false and misleading analogy. Sherry one of the great wines of the world.
OK VS I have nothing left to compensate with except my attempt at hari kari

However, not the last bottle of Clos du Papillon 1990 is pristine, and holding well. No rush on this one.

You are, of course, correct. I stand apologetic. In my defense I only say that sherry is a great and joyous wine, untroubled by a little flippant humour.

So, delightful young, but quickly falling apart and showing flaws with time?

Not entirely convinced.

Because of poor handling.

Just so he can take a shot at a woman with extreme mammary problems our missing poet laureate returns. I hope in the future you'll raise the literary bar higher than your exchange with Kane. For a man of letters such as yourself it's demeaning.
